Easton, Pa. - Lafayette volleyball fell to visiting Lehigh, 3-1, in the team's first Patriot League contest of the season. Danielle Towslee paced the Lafayette attack with a team-high 12 kills.
Jet Manzi chipped in nine kills for Lafayette (3-9, 0-1 PL), while Kelly Flynn and Katy Rooney each contributed seven. Freshman Tori Smith had a match-best 36 assists. On the defensive side, Lauren Pisauro came up with a match-high 20 kills and Flynn and Towslee had five and four blocks, respectively. Lehigh was led by Morgan Lowe's 14 kills and 14 digs. Kaylynn Genemaras also finished with 10 kills.
After falling behind early in the first set, back-to-back kills from Manzi and Towslee, followed by a Rooney and Towslee block tied the set at three. A 12-5 spurt from Lehigh was slowed by another Manzi kill, but the Mountain Hawks continued to lead and took the opening set, 25-15.
In the second frame, Lafayette took an early 2-0 lead on a service ace from Manzi. Three kills from Towslee midway through the set gave the Leopards a 14-13 advantage, but Lehigh pushed ahead, 18-15, on a pair of service aces. The Mountain Hawks would hold off the Leopards and take the second set, 25-20, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Lafayette and Lehigh exchanged points early in the third game, with Rooney hitting for a pair of kills to tie the game at nine. The Leopards used an 8-1 run highlighted by two Towslee kills and a kill and ace from Manzi. Lehigh chipped into the Leopard lead late in the set and tied it at 22. Lafayette used kills from Rooney and Towslee late in the frame to take the third set, 25-23, and cut the lead to 2-1.
The fourth set was back and forth early on with neither team able to pull ahead by more than two. Lehigh finally edged ahead with a 5-1 spurt to take a 19-14 lead. Two kills from Manzi and a kill from Towslee pulled the Leopards to within four. Trailing 23-19, Manzi cut the lead to two with a kill and a solo block. After a Lehigh point, Flynn made it 24-22 with a kill, but Lehigh was able to convert the next point and take the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
Lafayette hosts Navy at 7 p.m. on Friday night in the second Patriot League match for the squad.
