Baltimore, Md. - Lafayette took down Loyola in four sets to claim its first Patriot League victory of the season. The Leopards were led by Jet Manzi's match-high 12 kills.
Freshman Elizabeth Walsh tallied eight kills, while Kelly Flynn and Katy Rooney each had seven kills in the win. Lauren Pisauro had a match-high 16 digs and Tori Smith handed out 27 assists. Loyola was led by Molly Cichosz with 12 kills.
The opening set was back and forth with neither team able to push ahead by more than three points. A block from Smith and Rooney pushed the Leopards ahead, 12-11, midway through the game. With Lafayette ahead 16-15, Danielle Towslee came up with a kill to push the lead to 17-15. Another block from Flynn and Towslee gave Lafayette a 23-22 advantage, but a 3-0 spurt from Loyola gave the Greyhounds the first set, 25-23.
Loyola ran out to a 13-7 lead in the second game, but the Leopards came roaring back. A 12-5 run from Lafayette was highlighted by a pair of blocks from Flynn, followed by two kills and two aces from Manzi to give the Leopards a 19-18 edge. The Greyhounds took a 24-22 lead before another Manzi kill and a Pisauro ace tied the set at 24. With the score tied at 26, Smith smashed a kill that was followed by a Manzi ace to give the Leopards the second set, 28-26.
Lafayette jumped ahead early in the third set, 14-6, on a pair of kills from Towslee. The Leopards controlled the rest of the set, taking the third frame 25-14. Towslee and Walsh led the Leopards with three kills apiece in the game.
In the fourth set, the two teams exchanged points until a kill from Manzi and a block from Towslee pushed the Leopards ahead, 16-12. The Greyhounds came back quickly with a four-point run of their own to tie the game at 16. The Leopards answered with a pair of aces from Towslee and a pair of kills from Flynn to take a 22-16 lead. Loyola climbed back into the set and took brief leads of 24-23 and 25-24, before a kill from Walsh and an ace from Smith closed out the set, 27-25, and the match, 3-1.
Lafayette moved to 1-3 in Patriot League play, while Loyola dropped to 0-2. The Leopards return to Kirby Sports Center on Wednesday night against NJIT.
