ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Elizabeth Walsh topped the team in kills for a third match in a row, and Katie Rethmeyer had one of her strongest performances of 2015, but neither could prevent Navy from pulling out a 3-0 victory over Lafayette Saturday afternoon.
The Midshipmen (4-17, 2-6 PL) have now won back-to-back conference matches in straight sets after a winless start, and they moved ahead of the Leopards (10-9, 2-6 PL) in the league standings with today's win. Set scores were 25-20, 25-18, 25-16.
Walsh registered eight kills and three blocks in the losing effort, and her .353 attack percentage was tied with Rethmeyer for the team lead among those with at least five attempts. Rethmeyer contributed seven kills and a block, while Katherine Stevens had a match-high five blocks.
Navy used a 6-0 run midway through the first set to break open what had been a 12-12 tie. The Mids never trailed in the second set after scoring the first four points of the frame, and they also led throughout the third after jumping out to a 3-0 advantage. Navy earned several free points from the service line, finishing with 12 aces compared to four for the Maroon and White.
Two of those aces for Lafayette came from Maria Balus, and she also added 24 assists and six digs. Lauren Pisauro notched 11 digs for a second-straight match, and Jet Manzi chipped in 10 digs and four kills.
The Leopards will look to end their slide Wednesday night against Lehigh in the inaugural Warrior Rivalry. That match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
