BALTIMORE - A 3-0 home victory over Loyola on Sept. 26 was the final match of a 10-4 month for Lafayette, and a trip down to Baltimore Friday night proved to be what the Leopards needed to return to their winning ways.
Elizabeth Walsh fired in 15 kills and Katherine Stevens contributed to six of the team's nine blocks in a 3-1 road win for the Maroon and White. Set scores were 25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19.
The triumph moved Lafayette (11-10, 3-7 PL) back over .500 for the season, while Loyola (6-18, 1-8 PL) suffered its fifth-straight defeat. Brianne Giangiobbe chipped in 11 kills for the visitors, and Lauren Pisauro provided her usual strong defensive output with 19 digs.
"We put together a solid overall team performance," head coach Terri Dadio Campbell said. "Everyone did their part and worked together on the court. It was great to sweep Loyola and get a nice win on the road."
The two teams were deadlocked at 13-13 midway through the opening set when back-to-back kills from Giangiobbe and an ace from Pisauro started a 4-0 run for the Leopards. They would not trail again in the frame, with two straight Greyhound errors finishing off the set.
The second set was similarly tight, with Lafayette trailing 19-18 in the later stages. Two Loyola errors and a Giangiobbe kill got the Maroon and White back on track, and the last of two aces for Jet Manzi on the evening doubled the Leopards' set advantage. Lafayette had seven aces from six different players, the most that the team has registered since Oct. 3 against Bucknell.
The Greyhounds managed a .289 attack percentage in set three to extend the match. They kept things close throughout most of the fourth set as well, with the score 17-16, Leopards past the midway point. A kill from Tori Smith started a 4-0 run to give the visitors some breathing room, and Walsh's 15th and final kill officially snapped Lafayette's six-match losing streak.
"Lizzi Walsh had a great night at the net," Dadio Campbell said. "In addition to her kills, she came up with some critical blocks for us."
Walsh and Maria Balus each had a .300 attack percentage in the win. Stevens' six blocks were one shy of a season-best, and she additionally supplied seven kills.
The Leopards have now won five-straight matches over Loyola, and this was their second road victory of the season. They face a tough task tomorrow, traveling to league-leading American (18-6, 9-0 PL) for a 2 p.m. contest.
