MADISON, N.J. - Lafayette kicked off its 2015-16 campaign at the Drew Fall Fencing Classic Saturday afternoon. The Leopard men took part in two matches, topping Hunter 17-10 and falling to Drew 15-12, while the women dropped contests against Drew, Hunter, LIU Post and CCNY.
An 8-1 record in the sabre played a key role in the men's triumph over Hunter. Alex Gorloff and Jake Burns each won all three of their bouts, while Zack Sohn added a pair of victories. David Jennings, meanwhile, went a perfect 3-0 in the epee and David Shindell took two of his three bouts.
Andrew Mange had a strong debut for Lafayette in the foil, sweeping his three bouts against Drew and going 2-1 against Hunter. The Leopards lost their other six foil bouts against the host Rangers, however, and that ultimately made the difference with the teams going 9-9 across the other two weapon competitions. Gorloff went 3-0 in the sabre to complete a 5-1 afternoon, and Jennings tallied two more wins in the epee.
Andie Mitchell and Julia Sheng each won 2 of 3 bouts in the foil, and Costanza Davis went unbeaten in the epee to lead the women against Drew. Sheng added three more victories against Hunter, and she finished the afternoon with a 7-3 mark overall. Davis also took all three bouts against the Hawks, and Lafayette's 16-9 defeat to Hunter was its closest match of the day.
The fencing teams return to action next Sunday at the Vassar Invitational.
