WASHINGTON, D.C. - Lafayette kicked off a busy spring break week with a doubleheader at George Washington on Friday morning. The teams squared off at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in the District with GW claiming 6-1 and 1-0 decisions.
Both teams threatened in the first inning of game one, but it was the Colonials who got off to a quick start. Lafayette loaded the bases with two outs, before GW replaced starting pitcher Paige Kovalsky with Sarah Costlow who enticed Allison Brown into a groundout to end the inning.
George Washington (12-8) put three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning, the first coming on a throwing error on a stolen base. Kovalsky (single) and Carlee Gray (triple) knocked in runs for the early lead. Kovalsky was 3-for-3 with two RBI.
The hosts added runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. Lafayette got onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs in the inning, Bryn Gornick, Rebecca Dvorak and Alex Jacinto all singled with Jacinto knocking in Dvorak for the 6-1 final.
Kristyn Marinelli (0-4) threw 4.1 innings in the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Costlow collected the win, tossing 6.1 innings while surrendering one run on four hits.
In game two, George Washington pushed across two runs in the sixth to snatch the 5-4 victory.
The Leopards (0-10) put two runs on the board in the first inning. Sam Sweigart drew a lead-off walk. Jenna Didio (3-for-4) followed with a single and Gornick doubled home Sweigart for the first run of the game. Didio scored on an error by Costlow for the 2-0 lead.
George Washington evened the score in the third inning. Kovalsky's only hit in the game cut Lafayette's lead in half and the tying run came plateward with two outs in the inning. GW put the pressure on Lafayette's defense, as Kovalsky scored from third before Gray was cut down trying to steal second.
Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, Lafayette tied the game. Kelly Lallis used a two-out single to score Morgan Biddle from second for the 3-3 tie. The Colonials answered in the bottom of the frame with Samantha Dos Santos' two-run home run with Gray aboard after a lead-off triple. GW led 5-3.
In the seventh, Didio doubled with one out in the inning. Gornick followed with a single and Didio scored on a fielder's choice from Marinelli. Brown popped up to end the game.
