FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Jason Sands tallied a hat trick and two assists, but the Lafayette men's lacrosse team fell at Sacred Heart, 14-11, on Tuesday afternoon.
Lafayette (1-6) cut the deficit to two goals late in the game, but Sacred Heart (3-2) was able to hold on for the win. Eric Joseph finished with a pair of goals and an assist, while Morgan Westby and Sonny Round chipped in two goals apiece. The Pioneers were led by Brian Masi with a game-high five goals.
The Leopards opened the scoring five minutes into the contest with a tally from Joseph. Sacred Heart countered with the next three goals to build a 3-1 lead late in the first quarter. Westby scored his first of the afternoon to make it 3-2 with 23 seconds to go in the opening period, but a marker from the Pioneers in the closing seconds gave Sacred Heart a 4-2 advantage at the end of one.
After a Pioneer goal to start the second quarter, Robert Orazietti found the back of the cage, followed by Sands' first of the game at the 12:12 mark to make it 5-4. Sacred Heart tallied the next three goals to take a four-goal lead, 8-4. Round's first marker of the night cut the deficit to three at halftime.
Masi tallied the first goal of the second half, but it was quickly answered by the Leopards. Kevin Lewis fed Sands for a tally just 20 seconds later. Lafayette took advantage of a man-up opportunity at the 9:33 mark. Sands found McAvoy for a man-up goal to trim the deficit to two, 9-7.
Sacred Heart broke the Lafayette spurt, but another dish from Sands to Joseph brought the spread back to two, 10-8. After the Pioneers bumped the margin back to three, Round tallied his second of the afternoon with 4:30 to play in the third quarter. A goal from Sacred Heart gave the Pioneers a 12-9 lead at the end of three quarters.
A tally from Sacred Heart with 10:31 to play pushed the Pioneer advantage to four, 13-9. At the 5:25 mark, Westby found the back of the net. Sands completed his hat trick in the final minute to make it 13-11, but a late marker from Masi sent the Pioneers to a 14-11 win over the Leopards.
Lafayette resumes Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon against Loyola. Opening faceoff from Fisher Stadium is set for 4:30 p.m.
