EASTON, Pa. -- Lehigh scored nine runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to hand Lafayette an 11-0 loss in the Patriot League softball opener on Saturday at Metzgar Fields.
Lehigh (17-3, 1-0) starter Emily Bausher held Lafayette to four hits and struck out seven on the afternoon for her eighth win of the season. The Mountain Hawks pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the second. Vicky Lattanzio recorded a lead-off double and later scored on an Emma Capetz (2-for-2) single. Lehigh added another run when MacKenzie Velasquez drew a bases-loaded walk, one of seven free passes on the afternoon.
The visitors extended their lead in the fourth inning with three runs on three hits. With the bases loaded and no outs, Alexis Watanabe slapped a single down the leftfield line to plate a run. The next batter, Morgan Decker, reached on a fielder's choice. The Leopards could have cut down at runner at the plate, but the throw was low, allowing Velasquez to score.
Lafayette (1-17, 0-1) head coach Jexx Varner made the pitching change, lifting starter Lindsey Cherry (3 IP, 6H, 4ER, 5BB, 2K) for classmate Kristyn Marinelli. Marinelli was able to get a ground ball out and then shortstop Jenna Didio made an over-the shoulder grab in the infield and doubled up a runner to end the inning.
The Leopards had their best scoring chance in the bottom of the fourth. Freshmen Stephanie Thomas and Rebecca Dvorak put runners on first and second with one out. Classmate Sam Sweigart popped up for the second out of the inning, but Allison Brown loaded the bases with a single through the left side. Alex Jacinto pinch hit for Miranda Skurla and went down swinging to strand three baserunners with Lehigh's 5-0 lead intact.
Lehigh put the game out of reach in the fifth inning, scoring six runs on six hits while batting around the order. Three runs came plateward via a pair of walks and a hit batter with the bases loaded.
Lafayette will host Lehigh in a Sunday doubleheader beginning at noon at Metzar Fields.
