EASTON, Pa. -- The Lafayette softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against visiting Marist on Tuesday afternoon, falling in the first contest, 6-2, and the second 15-8. The second game was the highest scoring contest of the season for the Leopards with 23 runs combined between the two squads.

Game One

Marist opened up the game with three hits including a two-RBI triple from Janine Lalli to jump on Lafayette's Stephanie Thomas for four first-inning runs. Thomas got Jordynn Barerra to ground out to short to get out of the inning, trailing by four.

After a pair of three-up, three-down innings from Thomas, the Red Foxes again knocked it around in the fifth inning, loading the bases with no outs. Thomas was able to get out of the jam with just one run coming across on a sacrifice fly and the Leopards trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Lafayette finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as a throwing error from Marist led to the first Leopard run of the game. Kelly Lallis added the second run as Marist had its attention on a stealing Lauren Shoemaker and the Leopards ended the inning within three, 5-2.

The Red Foxes opened the sixth with a leadoff jack from Colleen McWilliams to extend their lead to four at 6-2 and finished off Lafayette in the seventh to end it with a 6-2 final.

Game Two

The Red Foxes loaded the bases in the top of the first off Lafayette pitcher Lindsey Cherry, but the sophomore got out of the jam with just one run allowed on a sacrifice fly as the Leopards trailed 1-0 after the opening frame. Marist's Jordynn Barrera knocked in another tally in the second on a base hit to right-center field and a third run crossed the plate on a throwing error to push the visitors' lead to 3-0 after an inning and a half.

Lafayette's Morgan Biddle slapped the first Leopard hit off Marist starting pitcher Janine Lalli into left field in the bottom of third, but was left on as the Red Foxes held on to a three-run edge after three innings. Marist added to its lead in the ensuing half inning as three more runs were plated to make it 6-0 for the visitors.

The Leopards finally got their bats going in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with no outs. Allison Brown walked in Lafayette's first run of the game and both Miranda Skurla and Kristyn Marinelli ripped singles to knock in a pair in the next two at-bats. Stephanie Schreiber struck out swinging for the first out, but Biddle added to the run as she walked in the fourth score of the inning.

Biddle's walk ended the day for Lalli as game-one starter Jayne Oberdorf stepped in in relief and gave up a pair of singles to Jenna Didio and Kelly Lallis, both plating runs to tie it up at 6-6 and keep the crooked inning rolling. Dvorak lined out to the pitcher for the second out, but Samantha Sweigart sent a single through the right side that plated two more before a fly out to left from Brown to give the Leopards their first lead of the game at the end of the fourth, 8-6.

Lafayette's eight runs in the fourth was a season-high and just one shy of its highest run total in a game this season. The Leopards defeated Penn in Philadelphia on April 1 by a 9-5 margin.

Marist added a tally in the top half of the fifth on an error and McWilliams slapped a single into center to knot the game at eight after four and a half. After a scoreless frame in the bottom of the fifth, the Red Foxes' Samantha Reilly clocked a three-run shot over the center-field wall to break the stalemate and put the visitors in front by an 11-8 score.

Gabrielle Kelliher knocked the 20th hit of the contest for Marist into left field for an RBI to make it 13-8 later in the inning, but Cherry came back in relief of Gornick and struck out Brittany Colombo to end the frame. Marist would go on to add two more in the top of the seventh and take the second game by a final score of 15-8.
