PHILADELPHIA - Lafayette's first set of its season-opening match at LaSalle was a memorable one, with the two teams tied on 20 different occasions.

The Explorers, however, ultimately emerged with a 29-27 edge, and they would ride that momentum to a 3-0 sweep of the Leopards Tuesday evening. Set scores were 29-27, 25-13, 25-13.

Jet Manzi led the offensive attack with seven kills and a team-high .222 attack percentage, while Lauren Pisauro added 15 digs defensively.

"We came out very strong in set one and executed well," head coach Terri Dadio Campbell said. "It was an emotional, long set that unfortunately didn't end the way we would have liked. From there we lost a bit of our confidence, which led to uncertainty and errors on the court. Being our first match of the season, we can certainly grow from here and that's our plan."

Lafayette managed a .208 attack percentage as a team in the opening set. After trailing 11-8, the Leopards took six of the next seven points, capped off by an ace from Maria Balus, to claim a 14-12 advantage.

LaSalle (2-2) earned the next two points, and neither team led by more than a single point for the remainder of the set. A kill by Tori Smith gave Lafayette what turned out to be its only set point at 24-23, but the Explorers responded with back-to-back kills by Bryanna Davis and Taylor Hite. The Leopards fought off three set points before an attack error finally sealed things in LaSalle's favor.

The Explorers took control for the final two sets. Lafayette had an early 5-4 lead in the second, but LaSalle pulled away with an 11-2 run, and the Explorers never trailed in the final set.

Brianne Giangiobbe followed Manzi with six kills overall. Balus and Sarah Moult each chipped in seven digs, and Katherine Stevens notched a pair of aces.

The Leopards make their 2015 Kirby Sports Center debut this weekend, when they will play four matches serving as co-host with Lehigh in the Crosstown Tournament. The tournament begins with matches against Fairleigh Dickinson (4 p.m.) and Saint Peter's (8 p.m.) on Friday.
