Fencing Begins 2016-17 Campaign at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Lafayette fencing team had a solid showing in its season opener at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday afternoon. In a total of seven matches, the men picked up wins over Army and Yeshiva.

The Leopards opened up the Vassar Invitational against Army West Point and edged out the Black Knights 14-13. Lafayette took Sabre 6-3, but then fell in foil 6-3. It came down to epee and with the match tied 4-4, sophomore Andrew Mange came up in the clutch and defeated Cody West in the final bout to seal the victory for the Leopards.

In the saber, freshman Ian Miller went 5-1 in the Leopards' two victories, picking up wins in all three of his bouts against Yeshiva. Fellow freshman Patrick Rekita in the saber and sophomore Sam McQuillen in the epee also went 5-1 in the two victories on the afternoon.

Senior Conrad Stoerker grabbed four victories in his six bouts in the epee.

The fencing teams will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 20 for the MACFA A vs. B at Hunter College.
