First-Half Surge Blanks Yale

Sept. 17, 2016

Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Lafayette men's soccer offense is officially rolling, using two first-half goals and stellar defensive play to knock off Yale on the road in New Haven, Conn. on Saturday evening, 2-0.

The Leopards have now scored five goals in their last two games after going through a scoreless drought to open the year. The win improves the Maroon and White to 2-4 overall this season with one more non-conference contest before the start of Patriot League play next weekend.

"The focus tonight was on getting out first shutout and we were able to accomplish that along with scoring two good goals," head coach Dennis Bohn said. "The effort of the team was excellent and Egan was tremendous. He scored a brilliant goal and was the best player on the field. We need to now prepare and focus on a very good La Salle team that will be a huge test on Tuesday."

Senior captain Ryan Egan opened the scoring for Lafayette in the fourth minute off a brilliant strike from about 22 yards out. Settling a steal-and-pass from classmate Campbell Weyland, Egan ripped a half-volley into the high right corner to take a 1-0 lead early.

Yale looked to answer about 10 minutes later when a bouncing ball in the box found the feet of Yale's Archie Kinnane. Kinnane sent a side-volley shot on target, but Lafayette junior goalkeeper Brad Seeber was well-positioned for the save.

In the 23rd minute, junior Christian Moyse flicked a free kick from senior Ben Marks just off the outside post as the chances continued to materialize for the Lafayette attack. Just under 10 minutes later, the second marker arrived.

Working down the left side on a counter, Marks sent a through-ball for freshman Evan Vare into the left side of the 18-yard box. The freshman took one touch and sent a clinical finish past the goalkeeper, off the far post and into the back of the net to give the Leopards a two-goal advantage.

The game moved through the halftime intermission with Lafayette continuing to hold a comfortable advantage in the run of play. Yale's best chance to get on the board came in the 67th minute when Henry Flugstad-Clark had a bouncing ball in the box find his feet. The Yale defender flipped it up to himself and sent a turnaround side-volley shot on net that Seeber was ready for, making a diving save to his right to secure his clean sheet.

The Lafayette defense continued to be strong through the final 20 minutes of the contest and moved its win streak to two with a 2-0 final. Shots finished at 10-8 in favor of the Maroon and White and corners were knotted at three apiece.

The Leopards return home for a clash with La Salle at Oaks Stadium on Tuesday before opening Patriot League play on Saturday, welcoming Loyola at 1 p.m.
