Vare's One-Timer Shuts Out FDU

Sept. 27, 2016

Box Score

TEANECK, N.J. – Freshman Evan Vare found the back of the net for the fifth time this season and that was all the Lafayette men's soccer team needed on Tuesday evening in Teaneck, N.J., taking care of Fairleigh Dickinson by a 1-0 score.

Playing in his first game of the year, junior goalkeeper Brian Ehrlich picked up the win between the pipes, notching the second shutout of the season for the Maroon and White. Ehrlich was excellent, making a couple of key diving saves and totaling five stops on the night.

The win moves the Leopards one game closer to the .500 mark for the season with an overall record of 4-5. Lafayette sits 0-1 in Patriot League play, returning to league action on Saturday.

The first half was an evenly-played defensive tilt as neither team could muster a real threatening chance. In the 19th minute, senior Ben Marks streaked down the left side, cut inside toward the left corner of the box and fired a right-to-left curling shot that was saved by FDU goalkeeper Sebastian Ferreira. About six minutes later, Marks had another chance, taking a short pass from Egan at the top of the box and firing a low, hard shot just to the left of goal.

As the game moved through the halftime break, Lafayette began to spend more time in the FDU defensive zone, leading to the lone goal in the 52nd minute. Junior Christian Moyse, the Leopards' long-throw specialist, sent a big ball all the way into the box that deflected off the head of a Knights defender and right to the feet of a cutting Vare at the top of the box. Vare one-timed his shot perfectly into the lower left corner for the game-winner.

FDU's best chance to answer came just three minutes later as the Knights drew a free kick from about 20 yards out to the right of goal. Enver Caymaz stepped up and ripped a strong shot low to Ehrlich's left, forcing a diving save to keep the home side off the board.

Shots finished at 15-10 in favor of FDU and the Knights had all the corner opportunities with six compared to none from the visiting Leopards. Lafayette returns to action at Army on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest.
