EASTON, Pa. -- Lehigh bested Lafayette 2-0 in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday night at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium. It was the first time the two teams had met since Lafayette knocked Lehigh out of the 2016 Patriot League Tournament.
The visitors led for most of the match after Ally Friedman's goal in the 29th minute. Things could have been much different for the Leopards, however, who had scoring opportunities including back-to-back cornerkicks in the 51st minute.
Lafayette's best scoring chance came in the 83rd minute when Krista Kissell drew a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. Lafayette head coach Mick Statham called on junior Lauren Johnson to take the penalty try, and she connected with an on-target shot to the lower left corner of the goal. Lehigh keeper Sam Miller made a diving save to keep the Leopards off the scoreboard.
Lehigh (7-3-4, 3-1-2) put things away in the 86th minute as Maggie Wadsworth took a through ball from Sabrina Mertz, dribbled, and then fired off a shot into the net to push the final to 2-0.
Miller finished with five saves in 90 minutes for Lehigh while Statham split time between Maggie Pohl and Kelly O'Brien who combined for three saves while each playing a half.
The Leopards (3-7-2, 1-4-1) next play at Navy on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
