EASTON Pa. -- The Lafayette women's volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-14, 30-28, 25-21) to rival Lehigh Saturday afternoon. The match marked the third annual Warrior Rivalry match in honor of Brian Keller '16.
Lehigh came out firing in the first set, taking advantage of two Lafayette attacking errors to open an 11-5 lead. After a Leopards timeout, Christian Luhnow stopped the Mountain Hawks run with a kill, but the momentum stayed with the Mountain Hawks. Tori Smith cut the lead to 10-15, but that was as close as the Maroon and White got, as Lehigh wrapped up the set with a 4-0 run to win 25-14.
The second set proved to be a wild one as five extra points were needed to determine a winner. Lafayette forced Lehigh into timeout after a Mountain Hawks attacking error brought the score to 11-8 in favor of the Leopards. Lehigh battled back forcing Lafayette into a timeout of its own after the Mountain Hawks took a 16-15 lead.
The two battled back and forth from there as the score was tied 10 separate times before the end of the set. A kill from Katrina Ruggiero gave Lafayette a 27-26 lead, but the Leopards couldn't finish off the set, as Lehigh came back to win, 30-28.
The third and final set of the afternoon was another tightly contested affair that saw Lafayette dig out of an early whole. Lehigh used a 7-0 run to build a 7-1 lead and forced the Leopards to burn a timeout. Lafayette battled back, taking advantage of two straight Lehigh attacking errors to cut the lead to 11-8.
The teams traded blows from there, and a Sonia Musso kill gave the Leopards a 19-18 lead. The Mountain Hawks regained the lead shortly after, and held their lead for the remainder of the set winning 25-21.
Luhnow led the way for the Leopards with seven kills. Julia Howard recorded 23 assists for the match and Audrey Mangum and Lexie Caraveo each finished with six digs.
The Maroon and White are back in action tomorrow when they welcome Bucknell to Kirby Sports Center for a 4 p.m. showdown.
