March 7, 2017

BALTIMORE - The Lafayette men's fencing team finished in ninth place out of the 15 competing schools at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) Championships on Sunday held at Johns Hopkins University.

The all-day event was highlighted by Alex Gorloff's third-place finish in the sabre. Between Gorloff, Patrick Rekieta and Ian Miller, the Leopards went 31-11 in the Sabre. Gorloff and Miller both finished 11-3, while Rekieta went 9-5. After their dominant performances on the strip, Gorloff and Rekieta qualified for the individual knockout stage, where they ended up being pinned against each other in the first round.

Gorloff won the match against Rekieta, advancing him into the round of eight. The sophomore then faced Gabriel Braun from Haverford and claimed the victory, sending him to the quarterfinals. Gorloff took to the strip against John Hare from Haverford in the quarterfinals and was ultimately defeated, ending the day for the Leopards. A season ago, Gorloff finished second in the men's sabre individual knockout stage.

The Leopards had no other representatives past pool play, but in foil, Andrew Mange picked up five bout victories. As a team, the foils went 10-31. Sam McQuillen led the Leopards in the epee with six bout wins, while as a group, they finished 15-26.
