Volleyball Downs Fairleigh Dickinson to Close Out Lafayette Invitational

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette College women's volleyball team wrapped up the Lafayette Invitational with a four-set win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday afternoon.

The opening set was a wild one, as the Knights jumped out to an early 10-3 lead forcing Lafayette into a timeout. The Leopards staged a comeback after the timeout knotting the score at 19-19 after a Carly Kutshcke ace. The teams traded points until the end of the match with the score leveling three more times until the Knights eventually won the set 27-25.

Lafayette flipped the script in the second set, opening up a seven point lead and forcing a FDU timeout after an attacking error brought the score to 9-2. The Leopards went on a 5-0 run behind the serving of Sonia Musso to bring their lead to 19-9. Lafayette held on to its lead to take the set 25-13.

The third set once again saw the Leopards open up an early lead, forcing the Knights into a timeout with the score sitting at 7-3 after a Tori Smith kill. Lafayette held onto its lead, weathering and FDU comeback attempt to win the set 25-21 on a kill from Musso.

The final set was another tightly contested affair as the Knights ran out to a 9-3 to start the set. The Leopards tied the game at 9-9, and then a few points later go on a 5-0 run behind four-straight service aces from Musso to bring the score to 18-16. The teams duked it from there, trading points back and forth, with Carly Kutschke eventually putting the set to bed with her final kill of the day to win 25-23 and take the match 3-1.

Kutschke led the way for the Leopards recording a match-high 15 kills. Smith and Musso both recorded double-doubles in kills and digs for Lafayette. Smith ended the match with 11 kills and 16 digs, while Musso finished with 10 kills and 11 assists. Julia Howard posted a match-high 48 assists while Musso led both teams with five service aces.

The Leopards are back in action next Friday, Sep. 22 as they welcome Holy Cross to Kirby Sports Center to open up Patriot League play.
