EASTON, Pa. - Three different players netted goals as the Lafayette Women's Soccer team ended its season with a 3-1 victory over Loyola Maryland in a Senior Day afternoon match at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore
Sophie Saldivar scored her second career goal, and first of the season, when she settled a ball that had been played into the box by senior captain
Katie Brannigan and delivered a rocket past Loyola goalkeeper Sumer Rahe in the 60th minute.
The two teams each traded goals off of free kicks inthe middle of the second half. The Leopards struck first when midfielder
Camryn Monfort delivered a free kick from more than 40 yards out that bounced off the slick turf and past Rahe for a 2-0 advantage at 66:49. It was the first career goal for the sophomore from Syosset, N.Y.
The Greyhounds answered less than a minute later when their leading scorer, Hannah Hoefs, scored her sixth of the season off of a free kick from 25 yards away. Instead of a shift in momentum, however, Lafayette came through with an insurance goal in the 77th minute when freshman
Ariana Aliprantis pushed a ball up the left side that
Krista Kissell was able to outrace the Loyola defender before cutting back towards the goal for her third marker of the campaign and the first career assist for Aliprantis.
"Yesterday both Krista and Sophie were in my office at separate times doing individual video work," said head coach
Mick Statham. "Both of them were talking about scoring goals. Sophie wants to score more goals and Krista felt that she should have done better last week at American in front of goal. To hear them take the responsibility and then going out today and score two really important goals is really satisfying from a coach's standpoint."
The Leopards opened the Patriot League season with a 2-0 win over Bucknell and close it out with a victory that knocked Loyola out of playoff contention. They didn't do enough in between those bookend victories to reach the Patriot League Tournament for a third straight season. Nonetheless, Statham has nothing but fond memories of the six seniors.
In addition to the pair of postseason berths,
Annika Sheehan,
Lauren Johnson,
Gabrielle Martone,
Katie Brannigan,
Alex Stanford and
Meagan McGurl earned much recognition from the league for both academic and athletic achievements that included several Player of the Week honors and 13 appearances on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. The sextet were honored in a pregame ceremony saluting their many accomplishments.
"The two things that I will always connect to this group is that their commitment has been unwavering on and off of the field," Statham said. "The second thing is, as a coach, they have made coaching this team enjoyable."
Lafayette completes the regular season with a 5-12 record and 2-7 in the Patriot League. The Patriot League Women's Soccer Tournament will begin on Tuesday, October 30 with a pair of quarterfinal matches hosted by the third and fourth seeds.
