Leopards Back to .500 After Midweek Defeat

Martino scores a game-high 17 points in the loss

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Lafayette women's basketball team could not overcome its first quarter deficit on Tuesday night, dropping a non-conference contest with Manhattan at Draddy Gymnasium.

After the Leopards (4-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead, Manhattan (5-5) battled back to get within a point at 6-5 before going on an 11-0 run to close out the first quarter. The Jaspers were red hot, shooting 55 percent from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc in the opening frame.

Lafayette battled back to get within single-digits on a few occasions in the second quarter as sophomore Olivia Martino scored the Leopards' last six points of the half, finishing with a game-high 17 points on the night, including a 9-for-9 performance from the foul line.

Manhattan hit all three of its 3-pointers in the third quarter, but the Leopards fought back, going on a 7-1 run midway through the period and held the Jaspers scoreless over the last 2:24 of the frame to enter the fourth with some momentum.

Martino kicked off the run with a trip to the line, hitting three free throws, followed by a transition layup by sophomore Drew Freeland and capped off when junior Tasha Vipond converted a strong finish in the paint.

Vipond finished the night matching her career best with six points on three field goals while freshman Jiselle Havas provided a spark off the Lafayette bench, scoring a season-best seven points with three rebounds.

The Maroon and White managed to outscore Manhattan, 13-7, in the fourth quarter and was 19-of-23 from the free throw line for the game. However, the Leopards committed a season-high 24 turnovers and failed to make a 3-pointer for the first time in a game since the 2015-16 season.

Lafayette returns to action on Saturday when Monmouth makes the trip from the shore to College Hill with tip-off scheduled for 2 p.m. at Kirby Sports Center.
