WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Freshman
Molly McAndrew netted her first collegiate goal, but No. 22 William & Mary pulled away in the second half as the Lafayette field hockey team put in a solid effort in a 4-1 defeat on Sunday afternoon.
It was a defensive battle throughout the opening half with the first tally taking 28:46 to materialize. The Tribe's Ella Donahue found Estelle Hughes at the top of the circle, who shot it high back across the goal mouth to beat Leopards' goalkeeper
Sarah Park to the far side for a 1-0 lead.
However, Lafayette's response was immediate as McAndrew made an unassisted play to knot the game at one. The rookie drove into the top elbow and surprised William & Mary goalkeeper Morgan Connor with a shot to the near side.
A tough score just before the halftime break gave the home side momentum into the intermission. Annie Snead found Woodard Hooper, who wristed it past Park with one second remaining for a 2-1 halftime advantage.
That momentum proved its worth through the first 20 minutes of the second stanza as the Tribe added two more goals to put the game out of reach. Lafayette hung tough to keep the margin at three, but couldn't find a breakthrough for a comeback as the buzzer sounded with a 4-1 final.
Despite the four goals allowed, Park had her best performance of the 2018 season with a game-high nine saves. On the other side, Connor finished with four saves and just the one goal allowed to pick up the win.
William & Mary led the way in shots by a 15-11 margin, but Lafayette won the corner battle, 3-2.
Lisa van der Geest was the top offensive weapon with seven shots, putting three on goal, while
Grace Angelella and McAndrew put the only other two shots on target for the Maroon and White.
The Leopards have two more non-conference contests before Patriot League play begins on Sept. 14. Next up is another Friday-Sunday affair next weekend with Temple at home on Friday at 7 p.m. and a trip to Hamden, Conn. to take on Maine at Quinnipiac on Sunday at 12 p.m.
