The Match-Up: The Leopards travel to Delaware for week two against the Blue Hens who are receiving votes in both Top 25 polls. Saturday's 3:30 p.m. matchup on
WatchESPN is the third meeting in four seasons against the CAA opponent, with two of those games being played on the road. Â
Last Time Out: Lafayette opened the season at Sacred Heart on Sept. 1, dropping a 35-6 decision to the NEC foe. Lafayette's 117 rushing yards eclipsed the team's total from all but one game in 2017 (187 at Lehigh on Nov. 18).
Familiar Foe: Lafayette head coach
John Garrett spent one season coaching under current Delaware head coach Danny Rocco and the two worked together on Al Groh's staff at Virginia. In 2016, Garrett was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Richmond, posting a 10-4 record while helping lead the Spiders to the NCAA FCS Playoff quarterfinals. Richmond averaged 28.6 points and 410 yards of total offense per game, both second best in the 12-team Colonial Athletic Association. Garrett's pro-style passing offense led the CAA with 271.5 yards per game. Saturday's game will mark the third time Rocco has faced the Leopards, as Lafayette split a home-and-home series with Liberty in 2008 and 2009. Â
Two QB or not Two QBs?: Lafayette head coach
John Garrett employed a two-quarterback system in the season opener at Sacred Heart. It was a departure from the 2017 season when
Sean O'Malley took nearly every snap of his rookie season. In the 2018 opener, O'Malley was the starting signal caller but split time with classmate
Cole Northrup (the only other QB to take a snap in 2017). O'Malley was 12-of-22 for 107 yards with two interceptions while Northrup completed 4-of-9 for 29 yards.
Bissell's Back: Senior
Jacob Bissell had a solid showing in his 2018 debut. The Allentown, Pa. native was injured in the first half of the 2017 season opener and missed the rest of the season. Bissell was an All-Patriot League selection as a rookie and converted eight field goals each of his first two seasons. Bissell hasn't missed a PAT in 41 tries. At Sacred Heart, Bissell accounted for both of the Leopards' scores, hitting field goals of 44 and 29 yards. He also punted, averaging 41.8 yards per attempt, including a 51-yard strike. On kickoffs, two of three attempts resulted in touchbacks. Â
Younger Steps In: The Sacred Heart game marked the collegiate debut for sophomore
J.J. Younger who did not play in 2017. Playing in the fourth quarter, Younger had four carries for 45 yards and was a solid changeup substitution for CJ Amill and
Selwyn Simpson. Â
Pearson's Possessions: Junior WR
Nick Pearson picked up where he left off in 2017 when he has a major contributor on the offensive side of the ball. He made five catches for 63 yards in the season opener at Sacred Heart. In the season finale of 2017, Pearson had just one grab for 20 yards, but carried the ball six times for 95 yards.
INT For YT: Junior safety
Yasir Thomas registered his first career interception in at Sacred Heart. He added a 39-yard return on the INT in the third quarter. Â
The Garrett Era: John Garrett is in his second season as the head coach of the Lafayette Leopards. Garrett took over the coaching reins on Dec. 21, 2016 and saw Lafayette register a third-place finish in the conference in 2017. Garrett has more than 25 years of coaching experience at the NFL, NCAA FBS and NCAA FCS levels. Offensive coordinator stints at Richmond and Oregon State preceded his hiring.
Helmet Note: At the school which is credited with inventing the football helmet, a quick look at the 2018 version shows the Leopards' white helmet has a slightly different look with a metallic "L" on each side. On the right side of the back of the helmet is a No. 23 sticker in honor of former Lafayette football player John Reynolds '77 who passed in January of 2018. On the left side of the back is an American flag just above the words "cur non" which was the motto for the Marquis de Lafayette and translates from Latin to mean "why not."
A Lafayette alum and all-time great running back, George "Rose" Barclay from the Class of 1898, is credited with inventing the helmet. The "threat of cultivating cauliflower ears" led him to piece three thick leather straps around his head for an 1894 game against Penn.
Opponent: Delaware enters week two after losing its season opener to CAA foe Rhode Island 21-19 on Aug. 30. The Blue Hens are coming off a 7-4 record and a 5-3 finish in CAA play in 2017. Fifteen of 22 starters and 81 letterwinners return.
Redshirt junior QB Pat Kehoe was 12-of-22 for 202 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Rhode Island in his first career start. The Blue Hens featured a solid running attack in the opener, as senior Kani Kane had 23 carries for 106 yards. Defensively, Delaware held Rhode Island to 330 yards of total offense, 170 through the air and 160 on the ground, but saw its own offense turn it over three times. Senior LBs Ray Jones and Troy Reeder combined for 23 tackles in the opener while Ball State transfer Frank Burton recorded a pair of sacks.
