EASTON, Pa. – Sophomore
Alex Petrie's falling-away runner down the right side of the lane with three seconds left in regulation forced overtime with preseason Patriot League favorite Lehigh on Wednesday evening at
Kirby Sports Center, but it was all Jordan Cohen for the Mountain Hawks in the extra session as the Lafayette men's basketball team fell by a final of 93-86.
Cohen scored 14 of Lehigh's 18 points in the final frame on his way to a game-high 33. The loss drops Lafayette to 5-15 on the year overall and 2-7 in Patriot League play, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 14-6 and 7-2 in conference action.
Junior
Lukas Jarrett played his best game of the season as he continues to impress since the beginning of conference play. Jarrett scored 17 points on 6-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line, adding five boards, four assists, three blocks and a steal with just a single turnover. In Patriot League play, Jarrett is averaging 8.7 points per night, almost double his 4.5 points per game average in non-conference contests earlier this season.
Another bright spot was freshman
Isaac Suffren, who scored a season-high 16 points on 6-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from the three-point line. Suffren added four rebounds and two steals, while sophomores
Justin Jaworski and Petrie rounded out the Leopards' double-figure scorers with 15 and 12, respectively.
Both offenses were efficient on the night as both shot at least 50.0 percent from the field. Lehigh went 34-of-63 overall (54.0%) and 9-of-23 from distance (39.1%), while Lafayette countered at 30-of-60 overall (50.0%) and 12-for-28 from beyond the arc (42.9%).
Following a first half that saw the visitors ahead 36-32 at the break, Lehigh scored the first four points of the second to extend its lead to eight. Then, Lafayette went on a tear, scoring 12 straight to reclaim the lead at 44-40 with 16:46 on the clock. The Mountain Hawks answered out of a timeout with a Caleb Bennett triple and James Karnik's layup with less than 15 minutes left made it a one-point advantage for the Maroon and White, 48-47.
As the second half moved to its midway point, the game remained within one or two possessions as a pretty feed from sophomore
Dylan Hastings to freshman
Tyrone Perry for a pair made it 53-51 at the 12-minute mark. The teams traded threes over a cold offensive stretch, moving it to 7:56 left and a 56-54 Lafayette advantage.
Lafayette kept in front until the 5:21 mark when Pat Andree's three from the top of the key tied it at 61. The final five minutes were all played within a three-point margin with Lehigh going ahead on five straight from Cohen, 72-69, with 1:03 remaining.
Down two with three seconds to play, Petrie drove down the right side and banked in a falling-away floater to bring the Leopards back and tie it at 75. After a timeout, Tejada's try from the right wing to win it fell off the rim as the game went to an extra session.
The overtime was all Cohen as he scored 14 of Lehigh's 18 points in the final frame. The Mountain Hawks didn't miss a shot in overtime, going 6-of-6 from the field, all Cohen, and 6-of-6 from the foul line.
A
Paulius Zalys steal and feed to Suffren for a bucket with 1:34 to play still had the Maroon and White in it, down three, but the comeback couldn't get over the hump as six from Cohen answered a Jaworski bucket at the 49-second mark to run out the clock with a final of 93-86.
The Leopards return to Kirby for the finale of the three-game homestand on Saturday, hosting Bucknell at 2 p.m.
