PRINCETON, N.J. –  The Lafayette offense could never really get things moving on Friday night against No. 19 Princeton in a nationally televised game on ESPNU. Collin Eaddy scored three touchdowns and ran for 89 yards as the reigning Ivy League champions beat Lafayette 28-3.
Â
Defensively, Lafayette junior LB
Ryan Dickens and senior co-captain
Yasir Thomas finished with 13 tackles apiece, with Dickens registering a pair of tackles for loss with a sack.
Â
The Princeton (4-0) defense held the Lafayette offense to 162 yards in the Leopards' final non-conference game of the season. Â The Tigers churned out 373 yards of total offense (203 rushing and 170 passing) on the brisk fall night at Princeton Stadium. Â
Â
In the early going, the Leopard defense performed well, while the offense tried to find its footing. In the first quarter, Lafayette turned it over, but the defense buckled down and forced a 26-yard Princeton field goal that slammed off the left upright.
Â
The defense stood tall again with 4:43 left in the opening stanza, coming up with a fourth-down stop. On 4
th-and-goal at the two-yard line,
Mike Hughes and
Damon Washington stopped Eaddy at the one-yard line to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Princeton got on the scoreboard on its next possession, just before the end of the first quarter. Eaddy finished off a six-play, 45-yard drive with a one-yard run for the 7-0 lead.
Â
The hosts stretched the advantage to 14-0 with six minutes left in the half after inheriting a short field. Needing to get the offense going, head coach
John Garrett had the Leopards' offense go for it on 4
th-and-1 from its own 29-yard line. The Princeton defense was up to the task, stuffing
Jaden Sutton at the line. Five plays later, Eaddy pounded it into the end zone for the 14-0 lead.
Â
Near the end of the first half, Lafayette used a 41-yard pass from
Keegan Shoemaker (17-25-2 for 129 yards) to
Nick Pearson to get inside the Princeton half. After a sack, Shoemaker made a couple of defenders miss and set up 4
th-and-7 at the Princeton 34. The Leopards converted the fourth down with an 11-yard toss to
Julius Young to keep the drive alive.
Â
Lafayette had the ball 1
st-and-10 at the Princeton 13, picking up six yards from Shoemaker to
Selwyn Simpson, who played for the first time since week two. A sack and an incompletion forced a 26-yard field goal by
Jeffrey Kordenbrock as Princeton led 14-3 at halftime.
Â
Princeton got the ball to start the second half and scored twice in the third quarter to put away the game. Eaddy scored on a three-yard at 11:22, and six minutes later Tray Gray scored on a four-yard run, as the Tigers posted a 28-3 final.
Â
Lafayette (0-6) will open Patriot League play on the road on Oct. 19 at Georgetown with a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
