Men's Soccer Stays Perfect at Home and in Conference Action

Five Leopards scored in their 5-0 victory over Army

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men's soccer team didn't let the rainy weather dampen its hot streak as they defeated Army Wednesday night by a 5-0 final to keep their perfect conference and home record alive.

Five different player's scored in the Leopard's explosive win tonight with two, freshman Benji Grossi and junior Martin Sssessenga, finding the back of the net for the first time this season.

"To get the zero in the back is just as important as the five on the board," head coach Dennis Bohn said, "To have different goal scorers' step up, starters and reserves, just shows the depth of our team.

The first 39 minutes of play didn't see much action as both sides were in a tight defensive battle. Neither side took a shot until the 17th minute when Army (2-5-1 (0-3)) fired one wide at Lafayette's (7-2-1 (3-0)) sophomore goalkeeper, Alex Sutton but it would be freshman Hale Lombard who would find the back of the net first off a beautiful header right in front of the goal fed to him by senior Chris Gomez and senior Ryan Goncalves. The goal marked Lombard's second of his collegiate career and this season.

The Leopards then wasted no time putting more on the board in the second half with freshman Yiannis Panayides scoring off an assist by senior James Gibson for the second goal of the game just seven minutes into the half. The goal marked Panayides' third goal of the season.

About 20 minutes later, in the 61st minute it would be junior Martin Ssessenga off an assist by Gibson for his first goal of the season. Less than two minutes later it was senior Adam Bramson tapping one in off a corner kick by Gomez. The fourth goal of the game marked Bramson's third of the season and Gomez's second assist of the game.

But the Leopard's weren't finished. In the 85th minute, freshman Benji Grossi netted his first of his collegiate career and first of the season off an assist by Lombard to make it 5-0, Lafayette.

This is the second five goal game for the Leopards this season. They first netted five against Monmouth on September 10. That game also saw the Leopards score one goal in the first half and then four in the second half.

The win also marks the teams, and Sutton's, fifth shutout of the season. The sophomore only had to record one save in the game, that being the Black Knights only shot on goal. Lafayette outshot Army, 12-7, taking eight shots on goal to Army's one.

The Maroon and White are still one of three undefeated teams in conference action in the Patriot League. Both Navy and Lehigh both pushed their conference records to 3-0 as well.

The Leopards continue conference action this weekend as they head to Baltimore, Maryland to take on Loyola at 1 p.m. They then return home the following Saturday for a conference matchup against defending Patriot League champions Colgate at 7 p.m.
