WORCESTER, Mass. - The Leopards fell behind Holy Cross in the first half but responded with the game-tying goal in the 60th minute to emerge with a 1-1 draw at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
The Monday afternoon contest began much as the scheduled match on Sunday did with the Crusaders going on top in the 35th minute on a goal from freshman Katie Hill. Weather washed out Hill's tally over the weekend as heavy rain and an unplayable field conditions forced officials to suspend the match early in the second half and declare the result a "no contest".
Lafayette pressed for the equalizer and finally broke through when junior
Rebecca Schreiner threaded a pass through the Crusaders defense that
Sara Oswald drilled past Holy Cross keeper Sophia Lettieri at the 59:59 mark. It was the second goal of the season for the freshman from Perkasie, Pa.
"We did not play great in the first half and going down 1-0 didn't help," head coach
Mick Statham said. "We were better in the second half and Sara's goal gave us new belief."
After Oswald's goal, the Leopards played an inspired stretch that almost appeared destined to tack on an additional goal. Defender
Rory Schauder nearly connected on a set piece but her header off the corner kick sailed high. A
Krista Kissell cross into the box was well delivered but a header by
Caitlin Balmer was just off the mark.
Each team had a handful of chances down the stretch of regulation and in the two overtime periods but neither team could find the back of the net. Senior
Abbie Bresnahan had the final opportunity with just over a minute left in the second overtime but her shot went high. Lafayette ended with a slight 15-13 advantage in shots and each team put five on frame.
"We couldn't find the winner but after a long few days I am glad we came home with something," Statham said following 165 minutes of soccer spread over two days.
Every point is critical in a tightly packed Patriot League landscape where a mere three points separate third through seventh place. The Leopards currently sit in a tie with rival Lehigh for the sixth and final spot in the postseason tournament. Lafayette owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Mountain Hawks by virtue of a 2-0 win on September 28.
The Leopards will conclude the regular season on Saturday when they host Boston University in a Senior Day match at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.Â
