Leopards Fall to Lehigh in PLT Final

Lafayette ends its season with a 9-7-5 overall record

BETHLEHLM, Pa. – The Lafayette College men's soccer team fell on Saturday, 1-0, to Lehigh in the Patriot League Tournament Championship game.

Leading the way for the Leopards was freshman Yiannis Panayides and freshman Hale Lombard, each with three shots on the night. Panayides took one on goal and Lombard recorded two on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Sutton recorded five saves in 18 shots faced over the 90 minutes of action.

The game started off in a defensive battle for both sides with Lehigh taking more shots on goal than the Leopards with the first four shots of the game coming from the Mountain Hawks. The first shot of the game would come from senior James Gibson in the 19th minute but his header would be just wide to keep it 0-0.

The Leopards best chance of the half came in the 30th minute off a header by Panayides but it was scooped up by the Mountain Hawks goalkeeper to keep it 0-0, staying that way into the half.

The Mountain Hawks would find the back of the net first in the 53rd minute to put them up 1-0 and from there, the Leopards would have two good chances off shots by Lombard and sophomore Will Echeverria but both were saved by the Mountain Hawks goalkeeper to keep it 1-0.

Panayides would have the final chance to even the score and send the game into overtime but his shot went high and over the net and the Mountain Hawks would stretch out the final minute to secure the Patriot League Tournament Championship win.

The game serves as the final game for the teams nine seniors. This class played a big role in the team's season this year, helping them battle into the Patriot League Tournament Championship after being picked in the presesaon to finish 10th out of the leagues 10 teams. Lafayette athletics wishes them the best in their future endeavors.
