EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team notched its second win of the season on Wednesday night, taking down LIU, 65-60 in
Kirby Sports Center.
Four Leopards hit double digit points in the win, led by junior
Natalie Kucowski with 14 and followed closely by senior
Sarah Agnello (13), senior
Alexis Santarelli (12) and sophomore
Jiselle Havas (10). Freshman
Reilly Campbell came close, recording seven in just her second collegiate game.
The last time the Leopards had four players in double figures was back on February 10, 2018 at Loyola. Both Kucowski and Santarelli were part of that group as well with Kucowski putting up 22 and Santarelli, 11.
Kucowski paired her 14 points with 14 rebounds for her fourth double double of the season and the 19
th of her career. Angello paired her season-high 13 points with a season-high four made free throws and four field goal. Havas paired her season-high 10 points with season-high 29 minutes played, two assists and one made free throw over two attempts.
Campbell added to her career night making three field goals, one free throw, six rebounds (two offensive and four defensive) and three steals. Another freshman putting up career numbers in the win was freshman
Shanell Haskins with four points, one rebound and making two field goals and recording one assist in 13 minutes on the court.
After Kocuwski won the tipoff, Santarelli took the ball down the court to put the Leopards (2-3) first points of the game in. LIU (0-5) would respond with a three-pointer of its own to take the lead for a brief second before Lafayette would go on a nine point scoring run to push their lead to 12-3 before LIU could score again. The Sharks would respond with a seven point scoring run of their own to take the lead 13-12. Kucowski would put one in from the paint to put the Leopards back up again but the Sharks would respond two buckets in the paint to hold a 17-16 lead at the end of the first period.
Throughout the second period, neither side could seem to get too far ahead of the other with the lead changing three times before the Leopards would break through with points from the arc from Kucowski and Havas to take the Maroon and White into the locker room leading 30-26.
Santarelli would open up the second half with a field goal from just outside the paint to put the Leopards up 32-26. The Sharks would creep back up and retake the lead in the middle of the third 39-36 but from there the Leopards would tie it back up and push their lead out to nine with two minutes left in the quarter. LIU was able to close the gap to four to make the score 48-44 heading into the final period.
Angello made a bucket in the paint to start off the fourth and from there the Leopards would hold onto the lead. The Sharks would bring the score within two, converting and getting past the Lafayette defense after a Leopards turnover and in the final minute of the game would bring themselves within three but two free throws makes by Havas would secure the 65-60 win for the Leopards.
The team recorded 14 steal, a new program best since March 4, 2017 when the team totaled 13 at Holy Cross.
Up next for the Maroon and White is a trip to Albany, New York, on Saturday to take on the University of Albany. They will then return home for their final game of the month, welcoming the Manhattan Jaspers to Kirby for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday.
