BALTIMORE, Md. - The Lafayette Women's Soccer team played a brilliant game of soccer, but a golden goal by Loyola Maryland in the 108th minute was the difference in a overtime 1-0 loss in a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal round match at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
Greyhounds senior Hannah Hoefs, the Patriot League Midfielder of the Year, took a pass from Ariel Tillman and blasted a shot from about 35 yards out just over the outstretched hands of Lafayette goalkeeper
Natalie Neumann to lift fourth-seeded Loyola into a semifinal round matchup on Friday at top seeded Navy.
"Both teams played really well," head coach Mich Statham said. "It was an exciting game and I thought our players applied themselves really well. We were great tonight and I hope that once the adreneline goes down they can be really proud of what they have done."
Both teams had opportunities to end the game in regulation or earlier in overtime. The Greyhounds drew posts on three occasions and Lafayette had a trio of good chances, particularly after halftime. In the first five minutes of the second half, Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year
Krista Kissell sent a ball into the box that
Abbie Bresnahan delivered to the left side of the net. Loyola freshman goalkeeper Paige Sim was able to dive to her right and thwart Lafayette's bid for a goal.
Kissell also sent a shot wide midway through the second half and with 2-1/2 minutes left in the first overtime midfielder
Sophie Saldivar played a beautiful ball into the box that Bresnahan headed just wide.Â
The final statistics underscore the close nature of the game as both teams ended with 13 shots and Lafayette credited with three shots on goal and Loyola two. Â Statham thought it was a marked improvement from the Leopards performance in a 2-1 loss to the Greyhounds just 17 days ago.
"It was significantly different the way we played today," Statham said. "I thought we really came to play and that is all you can ask. Unfortunately we couldn't get the goal, and a great goal separated the two teams. We are obviously really disappointed because it ends our season but it shouldn't take away any of the pride we have and just how well we played on the night."
Lafayette finishes the 2019 campaign with a 7-6-5 overall record and placed three players on the All-Patriot League teams. The program will graduate five talented seniors and return eight players who started at least half of the matches this season.
