Leopards Take Down Colgate to Advance to PL Semifinal Game

Lafayette will travel to Baltimore on Tuesday to battle Loyola

EASTON, Pa. – After being picked to finish last in the preseason Patriot League team poll, the Lafayette College men's soccer team defeated three-time Patriot League Tournament champions Colgate, 2-1, to advance to the Patriot League Tournament Semifinal game, for the first time since 2012.

Lafayette will travel to Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday to face No. 2 Loyola in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

"We came out flying," head coach Dennis Bohn said, "It was all just a product of how hard we have been working."

Sophomore Marcos Kitromilides and senior Ryan Goncalves both netted goals for the Leopards in the victory. Both also recorded two shots and two on goal.

The game started off with a flurry of fouls, with two on Lafayette (9-6-4 (4-3-2 PL)) and one on Colgate (6-9-4 (4-4-1 PL)). The Raider's foul would prove to be costly as it was a foul in the box on junior Will Echeverria to set up a penalty kick for the Leopards.

Kitromilides would score on the penalty kick to put the Leopards up 1-0.

Colgate would follow it up with an equalizer in the 31st minute and it would stay 1-1 heading into the locker room at the half.

The Raiders would start the second half with a shot on goal but sophomore Alex Sutton would make a diving save to keep it tied at 1-1.

It would be Goncalves, off a pass from senior James Gibson, who would find a way passed the Raider's goalkeeper to make it 2-1 and the Leopards would run down the clock to secure the 2-1 victory to advance them to the Patriot League Semifinal game.

Sutton had a solid night between the pipes for the Leopards, making three saves and only allowing one in.

This is the first time since 2012 that the Leopards have advanced to the Patriot League Semifinal round. The 2012 squad won the Patriot League Tournament title, getting an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and would eventually fall to Virginia in the first round.

"Loyola is a very talented and dangerous team," Bohn said, "But like always, our boys will go down and play hard, no matter what."
