Leopards Eye Season Sweep of Loyola Sunday

Lafayette goes for its season-best fourth straight win

OPENING TIP
- The Leopards look to extend their season-long win streak to four on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, Maryland, battling Loyola. The Leopards took the first meeting this season in Easton by an 85-70 score on Jan. 9.

- Sophomore Justin Jaworski is eyeing a continuation of stellar play this weekend, going 42 straight games with a three, the second-longest streak in the nation. Jaworski is third in the country in three-point percentage, knocking down shots from distance at a 48.6 percent clip.

- Senior Paulius Zalys is bidding to become the 45th player in Lafayette history to reach the 1,000-point mark for his career. Zalys currently sits at 979 career points.

- After two straight on the road, the Leopards return home on Wednesday, hosting American at 7 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Lafayette would not be denied its third straight victory on Wednesday night at Navy, using a 46-point second half on 55.2% shooting from the floor to erase a seven-point halftime deficit in an 80-74 road victory.

The Leopards put five guys in double-figure scoring for the second straight game, led by a game-high 19 from sophomore Justin Jaworski. Senior co-captain Paulius Zalys added 15, while junior Kyle Stout and sophomores E.J. Stephens and Alex Petrie chipped in with 11, 11 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Lukas Jarrett made an impact as well with seven boards, four assists, three blocks and two steals to go with five points.

Navy controlled the opening half with a 41-34 halftime edge, but the Leopards came out in the second with a purpose, erasing that deficit in less than eight minutes as a Jaworski three at 12:34 put Lafayette in front, 54-53. From there, the Maroon and White had the momentum and never relinquished it, making the shots necessary down the stretch to secure the 80-74 win.

The victory improves Lafayette to 8-16 overall this season and 5-8 in Patriot League play, while Navy falls to the same marks both overall and in conference action. The win is the first for the Leopards over the Mids since Jan. 31, 2015, a 74-65 win in Annapolis, breaking an eight-game skid in the series.

THE SKINNY ON THE GREYHOUNDS
Loyola found its form following the loss to the Leopards on Jan. 9, winning four of its next five contests to sit at 4-4 in conference play on Jan. 26. However, since that overtime win over Colgate, the Greyhounds have won just once in their last five, the last time out at American on Wednesday, to sit at 5-8 in conference play and 9-17 overall this season. The Greyhounds are led by first-year head coach Tavares Hardy.

Andrew Kostecka continues to be one of the biggest surprises in the Patriot League this season, leading the conference in scoring at 21.6 points per night. Kostecka, who put up 11.0 points per contest a year ago, is shooting 52.1 percent from the field this season and 38.4 percent from beyond the arc. Joining Kostecka offensively is Chuck Champion and Isaiah Hart, adding 11.5 and 9.0 points per contest. Kostecka also paces the Greyhounds on the glass at 4.8 boards per outing.

LAST MEETING
The offense was clicking on all cylinders for the Leopards on Jan. 14 at Kirby Sports Center as the Leopards used hot shooting to post an 85-70 victory over Loyola. The Maroon and White connected on 32-of-58 from the field (55.2%) and 11-of-20 from three-point range (55.0%), while a number of Leopards posted career-high performances. Senior co-captain Paulius Zalys registered a career-high seven assists, junior Lukas Jarrett recorded a career-best five blocks and sophomore Justin Jaworski added a career-high six rebounds.

Sophomore Alex Petrie led the Leopards in scoring with 19 points on the night. Jaworski followed with 17 and Zalys added 16 with five rebounds and a steal for an all-around solid performance. Lafayette was in control for the majority of the game, leading for 36:18 of the contest and by nine at halftime, 39-28. That lead never slipped away throughout another solid 20 minutes of play in the second.

KaVaughn Scott led all scorers with 21 points for the visiting side, one of three double-figure scorers. Chuck Champion added 14 and Isaiah Hart chipped in with 11, as the Leopards defended Andrew Kostecka well, holding the Patriot League's leading scorer to just eight on 3-of-9 from the field.

THE POLISH RIFLE
Sophomore Justin Jaworski has been on a tear from the three-point line in recent games, moving up to third in the nation in three-point percentage at 48.6 percent for the year. Over his last 13 outings, Jaworski has gone 41-for-73 from distance (56.2%). At that percentage, it's only fitting that Jaworski is second in the Patriot League in three's made per game as well, knocking down 2.9 per contest.

MORE ON JAWS
Following a 2-of-3 effort from beyond the arc at Navy on Wednesday, Jaworski moved his streak to 42 straight games with a three-pointer. That number is good enough for second in the nation, behind only Mack Smith of Eastern Illinois, who has hit a shot from deep in 43 straight contests.
