BALTIMORE – In a game tied at 61-61 with two minutes to play, it could have gone either way in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon. The Lafayette men's basketball team swung it its way in the closing minutes, taking advantage of chances and locking in on the defensive end to earn its fourth straight victory with three on the road, a 69-64 win at Loyola.
The Leopards are officially rolling, having won their fourth straight for the first time since the 2014-15 season, a year that ended in a Patriot League championship. Lafayette hasn't won four games with three on the road since the 2012-13 season when it rattled off seven victories including a pair in postseason play.
With 1:16 remaining in a tie game and the shot clock winding down, sophomore
Justin Jaworski hit the turning-point shot, a three from the right corner through a foul to put the Leopards up four, 65-61. Loyola's Kenneth Jones answered with a triple on the other end, but defensive stops and 4-of-4 from the foul line in the final 15 seconds with two each from Jaworski and freshman
Isaac Suffren closed it out.
Jaworski had another stellar day, leading Lafayette on the offensive end with 18 points on 6-of-10 from the field, 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and 3-of-3 from the foul line. The Schwenksville, Pa. native also tied career-highs in rebounds (6) and steals (2) to go along with five assists on the day.
Senior co-captain
Paulius Zalys came as close as he's ever come to a triple-double, adding nine boards and a career-high eight assists to his 10 points. Sophomore
Alex Petrie was the other major source of offense, chipping in with 16 points on three deep triples in four attempts from distance.
The Lafayette offense clicked despite its season-high 22 turnovers, making 26-of-53 from the field (49.1%) and assisting on 17 of those 26 field goals. The Leopards hit 9-of-20 from three-point range (45.0%) and won the battle on the glass comfortably, 38-27.
The two sides started evenly as a pair of early triples from junior
Kyle Stout took the game into the first break at 15:40 tied at 8-8. The game stayed that way through to the midway point of the half as a strong take down the right side from Suffren made it a 17-15 Leopard lead with 11:48 left.
Foul trouble started to creep up on the Maroon and White around the eight-minute mark as sophomore
Dylan Hastings and Stout both picked up their third fouls and Loyola took the lead by one, 25-24. But the Leopards stayed solid as four from Zalys into the four-minute timeout tied it at 32.
Andrew Kostecka, the Patriot League's leading scorer at 21.6 points per night, hit a tough jumper from the left elbow to put Loyola in front again at 34-32 with three minutes to play, but the Leopards closed strong. Eight straight including back-to-back threes from Jaworski and freshman
Tyrone Perry finished off the final 1:20 of the half as Lafayette moved into halftime with its biggest lead of the opening 20 minutes, 40-34.
Loyola came out with the first four of the second to cut the edge to two, but the Leopards responded with a three from Jaworski and a run-out layup for Zalys to force a Greyhounds timeout at 17:20 with the advantage at seven, 45-38.
Petrie's floater from the right block kept Lafayette's edge at four through the 12-minute timeout, leading 47-43. But Loyola made a move three minutes later as a 7-2 run finished off by a banked triple from Isaiah Hart put the home side on top by a 55-53 margin.
A Petrie triple and free throws from Zalys regained the lead for the Maroon and White, up 58-55 with 5:31 to play. Hart's finish through a foul answered, though, for Loyola, taking the game to the final two minutes tied at 61-61.
From there, it was all Lafayette, moving to 6-8 in Patriot League play with the victory and 9-16 overall. Loyola falls to 9-18 this season and 5-9 in conference play. The win also solidifies the first season sweep in league play for the Maroon and White, having knocked off the Greyhounds earlier this season in Easton, 85-70 on Jan. 9.
The Leopards return home to
Kirby Sports Center in their next contest, hosting American on College Hill on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
