Men’s Lax Downs Manhattan for Third Straight Win

Leopards get four goals from rookie George Enman in 13-5 win

EASTON, Pa. – After an opening period that saw the game tied at 2-2, the Lafayette men's lacrosse team stepped on the gas in the second and never looked back, racing past Manhattan on the road for its third straight win on Tuesday night by a final of 13-5.

Freshman George Enman netted the first four goals of his collegiate career to lead the Leopards offensively, while classmate Cole Dutton and senior co-captain Conor Walters each added a pair of scores. Freshman Ryan Ness between the pipes and the accompanying Leopard defense allowed just five goals on the night with Ness making five saves for his third win of his rookie campaign.

The win moves Lafayette to 3-1 on the year, its best start since winning its first six contests in the 2010 season. Manhattan falls to 1-2 in defeat.

Lafayette sandwiched four-goal and three-goal runs around a Manhattan tally with 8:03 to play in the second to move a 2-2 game to 9-3 with 4:09 remaining before the halftime break. Manhattan scored at the buzzer and a Walters tally with 1:46 left in the third was the only goal for either side in the third period, taking the game to its final frame at 10-4.

In the fourth, the Jaspers opened the scoring to pull within five with just over 12 minutes to play. But Lafayette would not be denied, closing the game out with the final three goals, all off different sticks, to secure the 13-5 win.

Sophomore Bryan Hess chipped in on the offense with a goal and two assists for three points on the night and classmate Andrew Robbins picked up a game-high six ground balls for the visiting side. Classmate Gabe Smithline had his second straight solid performance at the X, winning 13 of the game's 20 faceoffs.

Lafayette dominated the team statistical categories, carrying a 41-22 edge in shots and a 35-21 advantage in groundballs. The Leopards' ride forced five failed Manhattan clears and the Jaspers committed 17 turnovers to Lafayette's 12.

The Maroon and White return to Fisher Stadium in their next contest, hosting Binghamton on Saturday at 12 p.m.
