PHILADELPHIA – The Lafayette women's lacrosse team made the plays when it mattered late in the second half to knock off Temple on the road for the first time since 1991 by a 13-10 score on Tuesday afternoon in Philadelphia.
It was an incredibly even contest throughout with the largest lead from either side ending up as the three-goal difference in the final score. The Leopards came back from a 4-2 first-half deficit to lead by a 6-5 score at the break and broke open a 10-10 tie with three goals in the final 8:33 to pull away and earn a 3-0 start to the 2019 campaign.
The 3-0 start for the Maroon and White is their best since 2013 when the Leopards began 4-0. Lafayette snapped a skid of 23 consecutive defeats to the Owls, having last won in the series by an 8-3 score in Easton on April 18, 1991. With the loss, Temple falls to 1-4 overall this season.
The Lafayette defense made a significant impact on the game with co-captains
Annelise Kinney and
Emma Novick causing a combined five turnovers on the afternoon. Senior
Amelia Heisler added a team-high four ground balls and freshman
Lily Bedell also slid well in the defensive half, holding the Owls without a score when it mattered most over the final 14:38 of play.
Sophomore
Quinn Lacy was stellar once again between the pipes, coming through with 13 saves for her third win of the season. Temple's Maryn Lowell stopped six Lafayette efforts in defeat to fall to 1-4 this season.
Offensively, sophomore
Anna Stein had one of the better attacking performances of her career, netting a hat trick and adding a pair of assists for a game-high five points. Senior
Jane Kirby was the high scorer with four goals, while classmate
Hannah Davey added three markers to go along with a team-high six draw controls. Novick added a pair of goals and freshman
Olivia Cunningham scored the other for the Maroon and White.
The two sides traded tallies throughout the opening half with Temple doing well not to relinquish its lead as Lafayette's two-goal answers served to continue to tie it up on three different occasions, 2-2, 4-4 and 5-5. Kirby's unassisted marker with 2:02 to play was the difference into intermission, though, giving the Leopards their first lead of the contest and momentum, ahead by a 6-5 score.
Temple took back control in the first 10 minutes of the second using a 4-2 run to snag a 9-8 lead. The Owls' one-goal advantage lasted through to the final 13 minutes, but two from Stein and one each from Kirby and Davey, along with a shutout in crunch time from the defense, proved the difference as Lafayette saw out a 13-10 victory.
Temple finished ahead in shots, 32-28, and ground balls, 21-17. Lafayette held a slight edge in draw controls as freshman
Caroline Curnal led the duties in the circle to a 13-12 advantage.
Next up for the Maroon and White is a trip to Riverdale, New York on Saturday with opening draw set for 1 p.m.
