Clock Runs Out on Second-Half Comeback Effort

Novick records a hat trick in the loss

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette women's lacrosse team scored three-unanswered goals in the final 4:12 of regulation to trim the Holy Cross lead to just one, but time out run out on the Leopards as they fell 11-10 in the Patriot League opener Saturday at Fisher Stadium.

The Lafayette (4-3, 0-1 PL) run got going when senior Jane Kirby found the back of the net to make it 11-8 with under-five to play, before freshman Caroline Curnall made it two in-a-row. Junior Bella Alampi made it a one-goal game when she missed on her first effort, but was able to regain possession and go straight to the crease with 23 seconds left.

The Crusaders (3-5, 1-0 PL) were able to win the next draw and run out the final seconds, shutting down the comeback effort.

Holy Cross jumped out to an 8-5 lead after the opening 30 minutes, scoring three of the game's first four goals to grab momentum.

The Leopards could not piece together any scoring runs as the Crusaders had the answer each time. Senior Emma Novick scored her first of three goals to cut Holy Cross' lead to just one, midway through the first half and again found the back of the net at 8:42 to make it 6-4.

Novick netted the first goal of the second half and helped the Maroon and White outscore Holy Cross, 5-3, in the final 30 minutes.

Curnal finished with the hat trick on five shot attempts and Kirby had two goals and an assist to lead the Lafayette attack.

Junior Quinn Lacy went the distance in net for Lafayette and made 13 saves on the day.

Eight different Crusaders found the back of the net for an even scoring afternoon.

Lafayette returns to action on March 19 when Rutgers makes the trip to College Hill for a 4 p.m. opening draw at Fisher Stadium.
