Leopards Drop Baseball DH to Navy

Lafayette will finish up a three-game set with the Mids on Sunday

EASTON, Pa.  – The Lafayette baseball team had two very different linescores in a doubleheader loss to Navy on Saturday at the Hilton Rahn '51 Field at Kamine Stadium.

In the opener, the visiting Mids only scored in one frame, but it was a 10-run fourth inning uprising the led to a 10-1 victory behind their ace pitcher, Noah Song. The nightcap saw both teams score often, but Navy pushed across at least one run in every inning except for the first en route to a 24-13 win to complete the sweep.

Lafayette second baseman Ethan Stern reached base in eight of nine plate appearances on the afternoon. The sophomore walked five times, collected a pair of singles and connected for his third home run of the season. The Palo Alto, Calif. native also scored four of the Leopards 14 runs in the twinbill.

Navy (20-9, 8-2 PL) broke out to a 4-0 lead in the second game before senior first baseman Richard Villa closed the deficit to one with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. The Mids had another big frame to stretch the lead to 12-3 with a seven-run outburst in the fifth. Senior catcher Christian Hodge had a powerful afternoon for the visitors - belting four home runs and driving in nine runs.

After the seven-run outburst by Navy, the Leopards (7-17, 3-3) got two back in the bottom half on home runs by Stern and Villa and later put up their biggest inning of the day with a five-run eighth that included the first home run of the season by senior Spencer Rouse.  All told, Lafayette connected for five home runs in the second game - Villa (2), Stern, Rouse and a solo shot in the seventh by senior Dan Leckie.

Leckie and Villa combined for six of the hosts 13 hits in the second game. Lafayette used nine pitchers over the 16 innings on the afternoon. Sophomore Michael Dunn contributed three innings of scoreless baseball to close out the opening game.

Due to possible weather in the morning, Sunday's finale has been moved to a 3 p.m. scheduled first pitch. Following the set against Navy the Leopards also have a midweek contest against Villanova on tap in the semifinal round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
