Novick, Rowan Power Leopards Past American

Leopards use late surge to down Eagles for first Patriot League win

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette women's lacrosse team would not be denied in its second Patriot League home contest of the year on Saturday afternoon, using a four-goal run late in the second half to pick up a 15-11 victory over American.

Senior co-captain Emma Novick scored her 150th career goal, one of four tallies to lead the Leopards on the offensive end. Junior Jen Rowan scored a career-best three times for the Maroon and White and classmate Bella Alampi, along with sophomore Colleen Bannon, scored twice for Lafayette.

Sophomore Quinn Lacy was stout in the cage once again with 12 saves and 11 goals allowed for her fifth win of the 2019 campaign. The victory improves the Leopards to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference action, while American falls to 6-6 and 1-3 in league play.

The Eagles started strong with three of the first four goals over the opening seven minutes to lead by a 4-1 score. But Lafayette settled in on the defensive end and got it going offensively as well with six straight tallies in response to lead by a 7-4 score with 2:14 to play in the opening half.

The Leopards, up 8-5 into the break, opened the second-half scoring on a Jane Kirby feed to Novick, but the Eagles responded with four of the next five to make it a one-goal game with less than 20 minutes on the clock. That was as close as the visitors would get, though, as Lafayette dug in defensively and held American without a goal for almost 18 minutes, stretching the lead to 14-9 and eventually running the clock out on a 15-11 win.

After losing the first four draw controls of the contest, the Leopards won 15 of the next 24 to edge the battle at the circle by a 15-13 margin in addition to an advantage in shots, 32-29. Ground balls favored the Maroon and White, 19-12, and Lafayette converted on five of its nine eight-meter attempts.

Lafayette heads back out of conference for its next outing on Tuesday, traveling to LIU-Brooklyn for a 4 p.m. clash with the Blackbirds.
