Cunningham Nets First Hat Trick in Women’s Lax Loss to Loyola

Novick adds three goals in 21-9 defeat to top-ten Greyhounds

EASTON, Pa. – Freshman Olivia Cunningham netted her first career hat trick and senior co-captain Emma Novick added three goals of her own, but the Lafayette women's lacrosse team couldn't pull off the upset at Fisher Stadium on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 21-9 contest to No. 10 Loyola.

The other standout performer was freshman Caroline Curnal, who racked up 11 draw controls in the circle, leading the charge in an 18-14 overall edge. The loss drops the Maroon and White to 5-9 overall in 2019 and 1-5 in Patriot League action, while Loyola improves to 10-4 this season and 6-0 in conference play.

Sophomore Anna Stein got the Leopards on the board in the fourth minute to answer an early pair from the Greyhounds, making it 2-1. Three more from the visitors were answered by a Novick strike at 21:12, but Loyola added four more to lead by a 9-2 score with 13:36 to play in the opening half.

Lafayette continued to find the back of the net, but Loyola couldn't be stopped, leading 13-4 at the halftime break and 19-7 with 11:32 to go. Tallies from Cunningham and Novick with less than 10 minutes left were the final scores for the home side in a 21-9 defeat.

Loyola led the way in shots, 35-22, and ground balls, 20-11. The Greyhounds forced Lafayette into 16 turnovers and committed just seven of their own.

Between the pipes, sophomore Quinn Lacy made nine saves in her 48:55 of action before junior Taylor Danson came in for the final 11:05. On the other side, Kady Glynn and Kaitlyn Larsson stopped six Lafayette shots on goal in each of their halves of play.

Lafayette returns to Fisher Stadium on Wednesday for The Rivalry with Lehigh in its next contest. Opening draw with the Mountain Hawks is set for 7 p.m.
