EASTON, Pa. - In the final non-league home game of the 2019 season, the Lafayette Baseball team ended up on the short end of a 7-1 contest to Seton Hall on Wednesday at Kamine Stadium.
A day after banging out 14 hits in a 15-0 win at Rider, the Leopards were stymied by freshman right-hander Nick Payero who did not allow a base runner through six innings. The Leopards finally scratched out a run in the seventh without the benefit of a hit and then
Dan Leckie ended the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the eighth inning against reliever Tyler Burnham.
Lafayette would collect only one more hit - a single to lead off the ninth inning by freshman
Justin Johnson. That hosts would put two runners on to start the final inning but a game-ending double play guaranteed that the Pirates six-run lead would remain intact.
Seton Hall (20-22) collected 10 hits off of Lafayette starter
Ethan O'Connor and four relievers. The Big East foe did most of their damage in the middle frames, scoring two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Senior
David Giusti and freshman
Frank Craska fared the best on the mound for Lafayette, hurling 1-1/3 and one inning of scoreless relief, respectively.
The Leopards can now devote their full attention to an important weekend of Patriot League baseball, welcoming Holy Cross and Army West Point for a pair of doubleheaders at the Metzgar Athletic Complex. The Leopards hold a two-game lead over rival Lehigh in the Patriot League standings. Any combination of two Lafayette wins or Lehigh losses gives head coach
Joe Kinney's squad a spot in the league postseason for the first time since 2015.
The program will honor its seniors prior to the Saturday twinbill against the Crusaders, with the first game scheduled for 12:15. Army West Point will play two games against Lafayette on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
