ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lafayette baseball team could not get its offense going in the opening game of the Patriot League Tournament on Saturday afternoon as a quality start from sophomore J.P. Woodward wasn't enough in a 3-0 defeat.
Woodward went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs with two earned, walking three and striking out a pair. All three of the runs against him came in the sixth following five shutout frames.
With runners at first and third, Navy's Jacob Williamson attempted a sacrifice bunt that went back to the mound for Woodward with a play at home. Unfortunately, the throw went to the backstop allowing Zach Biggers to score and two runners to move into scoring position. Then, a two-run single to center off the bat of Evan Lowery pushed the edge to 3-0, all the offense the Mids needed in the victory.
Facing Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Noah Song, the Leopard offense couldn't solve the righty, who threw eight scoreless frames, scattering four hits and walking two with nine strikeouts. Two of Lafayette's hits came off the bat of senior
Richard Villa, while classmate
Dan Leckie and junior
Trey Durrah each added a knock to round it out.
The Maroon and White will need to come back and win the final two games of the best-of-three series with game two set to begin on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. If the Leopards win that outing, game three will begin immediately following that contest, tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m.
