EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette baseball team finished off Patriot League regular season play on Monday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Army at Kamine Stadium. The visitors picked up a 16-7 victory in the opening game, but the Leopards came back with a 5-1 win in the second.
The star of the win for the Maroon and White in game two was freshman
Kyle Subers, who twirled six innings of shutout ball for his first collegiate victory. Subers gave up just three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts before he gave way to seniors
Kyle Johnson and
David Giusti, and freshman
Frank Craska to close it out.
Lafayette's runs came in the fifth and sixth innings with RBI knocks from seniors
Richard Villa and
Dan Leckie following a
Justin Johnson run scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. In the sixth, junior
Jake Sniegocki unleashed a solo blast to left for a 5-0 advantage.
Army loaded the bases in the ninth, but Craska came in for a strikeout and a lineout to left to counter the comeback effort and save the win for Subers. The victory, coupled with the game one result, moves the Leopards to 19-30 on the year, finishing at 12-13 in Patriot League play, while Army falls to 29-22, going 15-10 in conference action.
The Black Knights controlled game one, scoring four in the fourth, five in the fifth and six in the seventh on their way to a 16-7 win. Lafayette showed resiliency, though, cutting what was once a 9-1 lead to three at 10-7 after six before the seventh opened up the score line for good.
Over two outings, sophomore
Colin Hartey was the lone Leopard with a pair of multi-hit performances with two hits in each contest. Senior
Spencer Rouse recorded three RBI's in the opener, while freshman
Justin Johnson added a pair on a 2-for-3 outing in the first tilt to highlight the offensive performances.
Both Lafayette and Army will compete in the Patriot League Tournament, beginning on Saturday. Army will be the three seed and travel to Holy Cross, while the Leopards make the trip to Navy for a best two-out-of-three series with the Mids.
Prior to that action, though, the Maroon and White have one game remaining on their regular-season slate, trekking to West Long Branch, New Jersey for a meeting with Monmouth on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
