Women's Soccer Earns Third Win in Dominating Fashion

Butler, Kissell each score twice in 6-0 victory over St. Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Lafayette Women's Soccer team erupted for their most goals in nearly 18 years in a 6-0 win over Saint Peter's on Wednesday afternoon at Joseph J. Jaroschak Field.

Junior Krista Kissell and sophomore Katie Butler each scored a pair of goals and goalkeepers Maggie Pohl and Natalie Neumann combined to shut out the opponent for the fourth time in seven games as the Leopards improved to 3-3-1.

Goals came early and often for Lafayette as sophomore Sophia Hudson scored a mere 40 seconds into the contest. It was the first career goal for the Murrysville, Pa. native and came an assist from junior Rebecca Schreiner. Just over four minutes later, Schreiner connected on her second career goal after heading home a cross from Sophie Saldivar from the right side.

"Good performance in tough conditions," head coach Mich Statham said following the windy afternoon. "We played well and scored good goals."

Kissell scored her first goal of the game midway through the first half on an assist from freshman Melissa Lamanna and Katie Butler found the back of the net with just three seconds remaining before halftime as the Leopards put up four goals in a half for the first time since 2006.

The Leopards outshot the hosts by a 25-3 margin and had 11 shots on goal with more than half resulting in markers. Kissell and Butler provided the final margin with second half goals on assists from Camryn Monfort and Riley Dowd, respectively. The six goals were the most by a Lafayette team since a 7-0 win over Iona in 2001.

In addition to the first career marker from Hudson, Lamanna was credited with her first career points with two assists and Bresnahan also contributed her first collegiate assist.

"The players deserve alot of credit for their approach and attitude leading into the game and once the game started," Statham said. "They traveled well down to D.C. (against Georgetown) and again today."

Now that Lafayette has the road preparation figured out they will begin a stretch of home games after playing six of the first seven away from Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium. The Leopards will host Marist on Sunday afternoon in their final non-league encounter before opening the Patriot League slate with home contests against Bucknell and rival Lehigh on the final two Saturdays in September.
