High Point Takes Series Finale

Minghini went 3-4, hitting his second home run of the season

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Lafayette dropped the third and final game of the series to High Point, 3-1, Sunday afternoon.

The Maroon and White were led by sophomore Dylan Minghini who went 3-4 with a solo home run. Senior Brett Kreyer went five innings, striking out two in his 2020 season debut.

Lafayette (0-3) threatened to put the first run across the plate in the second inning after senior Mark Glover and Minghini each singled to put runners on first and second. Freshman Patrick Vandenbergh reached first on a fielder's choice, still keeping runners on first and second with one out.

Senior Jake Sniegocki looked like he had the shot for the Leopards to take the early lead, hitting one deep to left field but it went just foul. He then struck out swinging and senior Drew Jansen grounded out to High Point's (3-0) shortstop to end the inning.

High Point scores its first run of the game in the bottom of the second to go up 1-0.

Minghini tied up the game with a solo home run, for his second of the season, in the top of the fourth to make it 1-1.

The Leopards threatened in the top of the fifth when sophomore Justin Johnson reached first on a fielding error and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior Ethan Stern then singled through the left side and Johnson was thrown out at the plate to keep the game 1-1 at the end of the top of the fifth.

High Point hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead 2-1. They would then extend their lead to 3-1 in the eighth.

Lafayette threatened in the top of the ninth after Minghini singled to left center and Vandenbergh walked to put runners on first and second. But the Panthers got Sniegocki swinging to end the game.

The Leopards will head back down south next weekend as they are set to take on the Virginia Military Institute in a three-game weekend series, starting on Friday, in Lexington, Virginia.
