BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lafayette College Women's Basketball team defeated Loyola, 76-65, on Saturday for its second regular-season Patriot League sweep of the season and ninth league win.
The Leopards were led by junior
Natalie Kucowski and senior
Alexis Santarelli who each totaled 21 points. Junior
Drew Freeland also put up double digits with 16.
Santarelli's 21 points is a season-high for the senior as well as tied her career-high.
Kucowski also had a team-high 10 rebounds to record her 16
th double double of the season.
Lafayette (12-11, 9-4 PL) got on the board first off a layup from Freeland and after a back-and-forth battle, a three-pointer from Kucowski put the Leopards up 10-8.
Loyola (7-19, 4-11 PL) tied up the game, 16-16, at the start of the second quarter. The two sides would stay close throughout most of the quarter until a layup by Santarelli spurred a five-point scoring run for the Leopards to put them up 25-20.
The Greyhounds tied up the game once again at 31 apiece just over the two and a half minute mark in the quarter but the Leopards took a 38-35 lead heading into the locker room.
Lafayette didn't let go of the lead for the rest of the game, pushing its lead out as far as 16 by the start of the fourth quarter after a jumper by Santarelli spurred a 12-point scoring run to give the Leopards a 59-43 lead.
The Greyhounds tried to make a comeback with under two minutes left in the game, cutting the Leopards lead down to six but Lafayette used a jumper by sophomore
Nicole Johnson to gain momentum again and walk away with the win.
The win puts the Leopards at nine Patriot League wins, the most the program has seen since the 1993-94 season and puts them in fourth in the league standings.
Lafayette returns home on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game with American. The game will be the team's annual Team Takeover event.
