PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Penn took both ends of a mid-week softball twinbill vs. Lafayette on Wednesday evening, winning 11-3 and 9-1 at Penn Park. Big first innings decided both contests as Penn scored six runs in game one and pushed across eight runs in game two.
In the opener, the Quakers' Emma Nedley's connected for a one-out one-out grand slam in the first inning and saw her teammates stretch the lead to 7-0 by the end of two.
The Leopards' offense got things going in the third. Freshman
Jasmine Nguyen slapped a single through the left side and
Paige Grover did the rest of the work. She blasted her first home run of the season (10
th of her career) deep to right center field. Lafayette trailed 7-2.
The Leopards scored their final run of the game in the top of the fifth.
Kinzi Van Wyk singled and later scored on
Julia Romano's RBI-groundout to make it 9-3.
Van Wyk took the loss, allowing 11 runs on 12 hits over 4.2 innings. She walked five and stuck out one. Jennifer Brann threw the first four innings for Penn to get the win while allowing two runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.
In the nightcap, things started well for the Lafayette offense. Romano reached on a one-out walk which allowed fellow
Morgan Olynyk to plate her with a double for the early lead.
The margin was was short-lived, however, as Penn banged out eight runs on seven hits in the first frame, sparked by Ashley Waco's three-run double.
Penn (5-2) starter Abigail Abramson held the Leopard offense in check in the two innings she pitched for the win. Leopard starter
Kaili Reitano took the loss, giving up eight runs on seven hits.
Lafayette will return to action this weekend, playing five games in the Duke Invitational on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Leopards will face Kent State on Friday at 5 p.m.
