Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Stein’s 2OT Winner Sends Women’s Lax to Best Start Since 2013

Lacy adds 12 saves to hold off Manhattan, 10-9

EASTON, Pa. – Junior Anna Stein found a lane to her right, drove and netted the double-overtime game-winner back across goal to the left for the Lafayette women's lacrosse team on Wednesday night at Fisher Stadium, knocking off Manhattan by a score of 10-9.

The contest was as tight as can be as neither side held more than a two-goal advantage the entire night. Lafayette, down 5-3, 6-4 and 7-5 midway through the game, showed its resiliency to take a 9-8 lead into the final stretch of regulation, but Manhattan wouldn't go away, scoring with 11 seconds remaining to force the extra frames.

The Maroon and White tallied four of the six total shots in overtime, but Jaspers' goalie Ashley Gambardella made a pair of saves on free-position opportunities to keep the Leopards out. Lafayette junior goalie Quinn Lacy countered on the other end with a pair of big saves in the second half of the first overtime to send it to the second. From there, Lafayette cleared out and let Stein win it.

The win improves the Leopards to 4-1 overall, their best start since 2013 when Lafayette won five of its first six. Manhattan falls to 2-4 in defeat.

Sophomore Olivia Cunningham and Stein were the major sources of offense with four goals apiece and Cunningham added a pair of assists for a season-best six points on the night. Junior Colleen Bannon and senior Ashley Ender were the other goal-scorers as Ender's was a highlight-reel move to cut a 7-5 lead in half early in the second half.

Lacy, the reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, showed why with a stellar performance between the pipes with 12 saves in 66:47 of action for her fourth win. Gambardella made 10 saves in defeat for the visitors.

Manhattan led in shots, 32-27, and forced Lafayette into 18 turnovers, committing just 12 of its own. However, the Leopards controlled the circle, 13-10, and led the ground-ball battle, 20-18.

Defensively, junior Mia Magarro was the standout performer with two caused turnovers and a game-high five ground balls. Senior Ally Hickey picked up five draw controls to lead the effort in the circle.

Lafayette sticks around through the weekend as the second game of a doubleheader with the men's lacrosse team on Saturday at Fisher Stadium. The Leopards battle Mount St. Mary's with opening draw set for 4 p.m.
