Five Double-Figure Scorers Not Enough vs. Boston U.

Leopards can’t clutch stops in 81-76 defeat

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men's basketball team posted five double-figure scorers on Saturday evening at Kirby Sports Center, but couldn't find enough stops against the defending Patriot League champion, falling to Boston U. by an 81-76 score.

Picked to repeat as Patriot League champion in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, Boston U., entering the game at 1-5 on the early season, looked more like last year's version on Saturday. The Terriers dominated the glass by a 38-30 margin, and dropped 10-of-22 from three-point range in the victory.

Lafayette was led by 20 points from Patriot League-leading scorer Justin Jaworski, while classmate E.J. Stephens added 13 and sophomore Neal Quinn, junior Tyrone Perry and freshman Kyle Jenkins chipped in with 12 apiece. The Leopards were able to connect on just six of 19 from long range (31.6%) on the night.

The defeat drops the Maroon and White to 5-2 on the year overall, 3-1 in central division action. Boston U. improves to 2-5, sitting at 1-5 in north division play.

The Terriers connected on two of their first three from the outside to take an 8-4 lead after the four minutes. Junior Sean Good's feed to freshman Jon Brantley pushed the Leopards in front at 11-9, but Boston U. went back ahead as the lead exchanged hands to the midway point in the half with the Terriers up a pair, 21-19, at 10:45 on the clock.

The visitors opened up a 30-19 lead on a 9-0 run into the eight-minute mark before four back from the Leopards forced a stoppage at 7:31 with the advantage down to seven, 30-23. An 11-2 run into the two-minute mark swung the momentum back Lafayette's way and tied it at 38-38, a margin that would stand into the halftime break.

Boston U. stepped on the gas to start the second half, scoring nine straight points and forcing a timeout less than three minutes in, up 47-38. Perry's baseline jumper stopped the run at 17:24 and a pair of free throws from Quinn took it under the 16-minute mark at a five-point game, 47-42.

Following Walter Whyte's bucket at 15:41, Lafayette made a move, using a 7-0 run capped by the first points of the day, a three, from sophomore Leo O'Boyle to tie it back up at 49-49 with 11:15 to play. But Boston U. moved it back out once again, leading by nine at the 7:11 mark, 63-54.

Lafayette fought to get within a bucket with just over four minutes to play, but the Terriers held tight to the lead and never let the Maroon and White get closer than three from that point forward. Javante McCoy went 4-for-4 in the closing 20 seconds from the line to seal it, 81-76.

The Leopards get their chance at revenge on Sunday evening, hosting the Terriers at 6 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
