Spaans Gives Field Hockey a Second Overtime Win

Leopards 2, Bears 1 in OT1

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Lafayette field hockey team traveled to Rhode Island this Sunday, defeating Brown in the first overtime period (2-1). With this game, the Leopards are now 10-2 overall and 3-1 in Patriot League play.

Senior forward Alix Talkow earned her fourth goal of the season early in the game to give Lafayette the lead at 3:29. Talkow's goal off a loose ball in the circle ended Brown's three game shutout streak.

Both teams battled through the second and third quarter, each traveling through the midfield easily. Circle play was the focus, but neither team was able to get the ball past the opposing goalkeeper and defensive unit.

The fourth quarter showed Lafayette staying in their own half, with multiple tough referee calls resulting in more corner opportunities for Brown than the Leopards are used to giving up. The Bears tied the game at 45:53 in the fourth quarter with a goal from Catie Summers off a penalty corner tip into the top left corner.

The first overtime period began shortly after regulation, along with the arrival of rain and strong winds. Lafayette had two close shot opportunities on goal before Brown took some chances of their own.

A long pass from senior captain Audrey Sawers cut through multiple defenders to get into the circle, where freshman Lineke Spaans tipped it around Brown's Jodi Brine in the cage (67:36). Spaans now claims the rights to both of Lafayette's overtime victory goals, after a similar occurrence against Yale on Sept. 10.

In total, the Bears held the advantage in corners (3-8) and shots (9-13). Lafayette's senior goalkeeper Hailey Abbott made four key saves in the victory and Brown's Brine made three.

The Leopards invite No. 4 Penn State to Rappolt Field this Friday. The Nittany Lions are currently 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten conference after taking down Bucknell yesterday.
