EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team defeated Marist on Wednesday night, 53-50, for its second victory of the season.
Lafayette was led by a trio of Leopards who totaled double figures. Junior
Jessica Booth led the way with 18 while senior
Makaila Wilson and sophomore
Makayla Andrews totaled 12 and 10, respectively.
Lafayette (2-5, 0-0 PL) won the tip and immediately went up 4-0 before Marist (2-5, 0-0 PL) put in its first bucket of the game to bring the score to 4-2. Lafayette never trailed in the game.
Booth made a shot from beyond the arc to put the Leopards up 7-2 and they then pushed out their lead to 11-6 after Marist made two jumpers to put four more points on the board.
The Leopards pulled ahead to a seven-point lead, 17-10, before a three-pointer by the Red Foxes brought the score to 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Senior
Nicole Johnson started off the second quarter with a three-pointer for Lafayette to push the Leopards ahead 20-13.
Marist responded with a 5-0 run to pull within two before Booth put in her 10
th point of the night, stopping the Red Foxes run and pushing the Leopards lead out to 23-18. After a four-minute scoring drought from both sides, freshman
Abby Antognoli put in a layup to put Lafayette up by seven with 1:30 left to play in the half.
Marist drew a foul with four seconds left on the clock and made both extra shots to send the game into halftime with the score 25-20, in favor of the Leopards.
The two sides traded baskets to start off the third quarter bringing the score to 27-22. Booth put in a shot to put the Leopards by 29-22 before a series of Marist fouls helped Lafayette extend the lead 32-24.
The Leopards got in front by 10, 36-26, for their largest lead of the game with 3:41 left to play in the third quarter. Marist battled back to pull the score within seven heading into the fourth quarter.
With Lafayette up 42-35 Marist started to mount a comeback, pulling the score with one with 4:44 left to play in the game.
Booth answered with two points of her own pull the Leopards back in front by three. Marist responded with a basket from beyond the arc to tie the game at 44-44.
Johnson than drew a big and-one to break the tie, putting Lafayette up 47-44 with 3:37 left to play. The two sides traded a basket each with 1:16 left to play, putting the score at 49-48 in favor of Lafayette. Freshman
Claire Gallagher drew a foul and made one of her two extra shots to put the Leopards up by two with seventeen seconds left to play.
Marist tied up the game one more time, 50-50, with 10 seconds to go.
Wilson drew back-to-back fouls, making three of her four extra shots, to advance Lafayette's lead to 53-50, securing the Wednesday night victory for the Maroon and White.
The Red Foxes also were led by a trio in double figures with Zaria Shazer leading the way with a team-high 14 and Siobhan Boylan and Kiara Fisher putting up 13 and 12, respectively.
The Leopards close out their three-game home swing on Saturday as they welcome NJIT to Kirby for a 2 p.m. game. The Maroon and White will then hit the road for four games, finishing off non-conference action against UMBC, Fordham and LIU, before opening up Patriot League play at Colgate.
