Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Terriers' Comeback Too Much for Women's Basketball

The Maroon and White are back in action Wednesday night

EASTON, Pa. – Despite a strong first three quarters, Lafayette women's basketball dropped its game on Sunday afternoon to the Boston University Terriers, 53-46.

Senior Natalie Kucowski led the way with 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior Naomi Ganpo, in her first career start, totaled eight points and three rebounds. Sophomore Jess Booth totaled seven points. Senior Drew Freeland totaled five points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Boston U. (5-1 North Division, 6-1 Patriot League) got on the board first less than 30 seconds into the game but was quickly followed-up by a three-pointer from Booth for Lafayette's (1-4 Central Division, 1-5 Patriot League) first points of the game.
With the game tied 6-6 with just over five minutes left to play in the first quarter, the Terriers went on their first run of the day to push the lead out to 12-6. Kucowski broke the Leopards scoring drought with layup to make it 12-8 before the Terriers drew a foul and went 1-1 from the line to go up 13-8. But it was Booth, who pulled the Leopards back within range with a layup, followed up by a three-pointer from senior Sydney Sabino to pull the Leopards within two with fourteen seconds left in the quarter. A made jumper by Booth with three seconds left in the game tied it up, 15-15, at the end of the first quarter.

The Leopards took the lead early in the second quarter off a three-pointer by freshman Makayla Andrews to go up 20-17. Freeland added to Andrew's three with two points of her own to put the Leopards on a five point scoring run before the Terriers called a timeout to try to slow the Leopards gaining momentum.

The Terriers came out of the timeout putting in four points to bring the score within one. Junior Nicole Johnson drew a foul and made both of her extra point attempts before senior Sydney Sabino drained her second three of the afternoon with eight seconds left in the quarter to put the Leopards up 27-21 heading into the locker room.

Boston U. started to cut into the Leopards lead, and start its comeback, in the third quarter, cutting Lafayette's lead down to five with just over two minutes left to play in the quarter. Kucowski tried to keep the Leopards alive, draining a shot from beyond the arc to push the Leopards lead back out to eight heading into the final 10 minutes of game action.

The Terriers got the first points of the final 10 minutes of game action and from there, it was all Boston. The Terriers would outscore the Leopards 23-8 in the fourth quarter with the Leopards not getting a bucket until the 2:57 mark off back-to-back layups by Kucowski to bring the score to 47-43 with a minute left to play.

Boston U. would score six more points close out the game and secure the win.

Kucowski's seven rebounds in Sunday afternoon's game now brings her 93 away from becoming the Patriot League's All-Time Leading Rebounder.

The Leopards will stay at home for their next two games, welcoming Loyola on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. tip and then Navy on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tip.
