Leopards Fall to Eagles Friday Night

Lafayette and American are back in action Sunday in Easton

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lafayette volleyball team fell in three sets to the American Eagles Friday night in Washington, D.C.

Lafayette was led by junior Leanna Deegan, who totaled 16 kills on 41 total attacks. Junior Grace Tulevech totaled eight kills on 15 total attacks, freshman Alyssa Vitale totaled a team-high 23 assists and freshman Katie Weston totaled a team-high 10 digs.

American (2-1 PL) took an early 2-0 lead in the first set before Deegan got the Leopards (2-3 PL) on the board with her first kill of the match. The Eagles eventually took a 10-8 lead but back-to-back kills by Deegan tied the set up at 10 each.

With the set tied back up at 16-16, American used a three-point run to make it 19-16 and then later in the set used another three-point run to make it 22-17 before taking the first set 25-18.

Lafayette jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the second set before the Eagles broke the scoring run to record their first point of the set. The Leopards eventually pushed the lead out to 9-4 before American went on an eight-point scoring run to take the lead 12-9. The two sides swapped points until, with the score 14-11, Lafayette went on a four-point run to retake the lead 15-14. A service error by the Leopards tied up the set at 15-15 but it would be a six-point run by the Eagles that would secure the second set win, 25-19.

The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the third set and, despite the Leopards tying up the set 3-3, they quickly took control of the set, winning 25-18 and winning the match.

Lafayette is back in action on Sunday as the Eagles come to Easton for a 4 p.m. match in Kirby Sports Center.
